I posted a couple months ago about a trip I thought I was taking to Australia. The deal fell through but it's back on again.

I'm heading to Perth now in early Jan. Will be there for about 10 days and will be renting a car.

I've had years where I've done over 100,000 km/yr but always on the right side!

How hard is the transition...anybody have experience?

I'm pretty sure Australia and the UK are doing it wrong.

Not exactly Australia, but the same idea I think. :)

I worked in Kingston Jamaica twice, but I was a passenger with an experienced driver. It's somewhat frightening, everything is like a mirror image. I called it bizarro world...and that's not just because of the backwards driving.

In Jamaica, the horn wears out quicker than the brakes...

When I was in Jamaica I felt like I could be killed at anytime.

    It's a bit hard!
I went to Tahiti when I was young.

My main point of effort was this: when I go through an intersection I need to concentrate.

I mean, it's easy enough to keep to the left or right, as needed, most of the time.
But you need extra concentration when you go through a T intersection or multi-lane crossroads.

I was always wondering how many pedestrians or cyclists got broken arms or something from getting hit with a side view mirror. We came close to hitting a few people.

On major streets with dividing lines, I had no problems. It was when you were on a small, two lane road and another car is approaching, then you have to think "which side of the road do I move over to?" I did get it right everytime but i'd panic everytime, too.

I was always wondering why every cabbie asked for my Room number and then looked confused when I wouldn't give it to them. Turns out they use your info + room number to charge stuff to your room. The place is a tropical shit hole.

For some time now, used Jap cars, vans and SUV's have been entering the country, get licensed and insured here. There isn't a ton of em but they are around. Basically, they're driving on the wrong side of the road for which they where designed. The drivers perspective is all screwed up, not to mention what happens at any drive thru or toll plaza.
I'd heard they are in more wrecks per capita than regular vehicles. I can't figure out why they let these on the roads here?!

    Cheers, Barrie.

I drove in the Bahamas which was Right hand driving. It's not too complicated but you are definitely on your toes more. Remembering that you can't turn Right on Red Lights was the hardest one to grasp for me.

I had the opposite experience of being an Australian and driving in LA, the first 20 minutes were horrendous but after that it was easy.
A few local bands worth checking out in Perth if you get time are Karnivool, Eskimoe Joe, Birds of Tokyo, Tame Impala, Gyroscope, VDelli, John Meyer Blues Express

Yeah, I'm thinking intersections will be the worst. Will just have to pay more attention and hope that the guy in front of me knows what the hell is going on!
