Being an OTC (Obsessive Tone Chaser) for over 30 years not too many overdrive pedals impress me. I currently use a Marshall Gov'nr+. Any other OTC people out there know of a better OD pedals?
So the key here is "tone" as in endless crunchy sustain without tonal mutation like 99% of the pedals do. Tube screamers are close but don't have enough umph. So may boutique pedals out there but too expensive to try. Best tone I can think of to replicate is Billy Gibbons, Charlie Sexton, Joe Bonamassa, ect...

    Thanks,

Didn't know there was an a differance. Any natural frequency overdriven is clipping or distorting but if you'd like to seperate the two, I would say overdrive.

I am currently using a TC Electronic Dark Matter distortion pedal, and use a pair of TS9s converted to 808s. They work for me - for the time being...

    Yes, the difference is:

distortion has internal clipping (solid state)
overdrive, boosts the signal into the tube pre-amp

do you want the distortion created on a solid state transistor before it hits the amp, or do you want the distortion to begin at the tube stage?

Well here's my .02. I've had just about every OD/Distortion pedal you can think of. Sounding like someone else to me would be the worst possible thing I can think of.

The two pedals I use cover anything I need as far as drive goes are the Bogner Ecstacy Blue, and Fulltone Plimsoul. Both have a ton of tonal options, and will let you're playing come through.

If you like the ts9, put a ge7 eq after it and set the eq flat and the level up a notch. You'll get the umph youre looking for.

The best distortion pedal I have ever heard is the CMAT Mods Brownie. It is a $135 new and it is built like a tank. There are a zillion great overdrive pedals so that makes it harder to pick just one. The CMAT Mods Signa Drive is one of the best for sure and it is also $135.

Oh man this is a funny thread!
WE aren't given much info to go on here, but I'd buy the Jvm, Vm, Dsl distortion devises. they sound great to me!
you'll be able to cop anyones tone, just NOT the live tone. (some serious knowledge is need for this) turn the presence back for old skool, turn the pres up for new skool cool.
If Dave mustain doesn't use any pedals, so too shall I!

I have that one and love it. I also want to try a Wampler Plextortion, and also try stacking the two of them.

It's the first 'distortion' box I've ever really loved plugging into ... it's a lot of fun.
