I wonder if any of the knowledgeable folks here could let me know as the 8 hole long box PA versions I’ve seen seem to be priced at about 1/2 of the 4 hole counterparts.

I don’t know if I’d want one as they are a bit ungainly aesthetically but it might be a more reasonable way into a nice original vintage piece.

I have a few Marshall PA’s, sound wise their isn’t much difference between a PA and a superbass

It’s not very hard to mod a few of the channels to lead specs.

    You’d be in good company!

Thanks Pulsonic, I agree with you regarding to the standard PA spec but I'm speaking about the long 8 hole version which is completely different head box.

PA or Super PA, same amp with just more channels.

If the aestethics of an 8-holer is an issue, why not look for a 4-holer?

There is a BIG difference soundwise between a 4 holer PA and an 8 holer PA! But you can easily disconnect the 4 extra holes/channels (2 wires to be unsoldered) and remove the extra pre-amp tube and the amp will be like a 4 holer PA.
The 8 holer PAs lack a lot of gain compared to a 4 holer PA in stock condition.

It use to be like this (very simplified) But PAs have gained popularity

Metal panel 4 holes = 1/2 the price of a Metal panel 8 holes

Plexi panel 4 holes = 1/3the price of plexi panel 4 holes

    Plexi panel 45/100 4 holes= 1/4 the price of Plexi panel 45/100 8 holes

Observe that the Jtm45/100 are more expensive than the plexis and plexis more expensive than metal panels

    Jtm45/100
    4 holes ~ 12000 pounds
    8 holes ~ 3000 pounds

    JMP plexi
    4 holes ~ 6000 pounds
    8 holes ~ 2000 pounds

    JMP metal
    4 holes ~ 3000 pounds
    8 holes ~ 1500 pounds

Very rough price estimates and note that prices are different on different local markets. Very few amps in Sweden are sold for very high prices and amps in the 10000 range and above always go international while a metal panel 8 hole just might fetch 1000 pounds here but 3000 in the UK or at least the US

    Plexi

PS it usually enough to remove the extra valve and disconnect the power supply to the small component board to make an 8 into a 4 holes if adding caps in the tonstack you can turn it into a Lead, not necessary if you run it flat out

I'll add that if you are not looking at a rare PA amp, it's very easy to mod it to have full Super Lead (4 hole) specs, *plus* a 2203 side. I did this on a 1970 Super PA and it sounds terrific. 100% reversible and no holes drilled. Vintage transformer, parts and sound, but budget price.

Where are you located? Maybe a 4 holder is less than you think. I have one and it was/is quite affordable.

Sorry I missed this. I have a 1971 model 1985 ENG PA. It screams with a 69 basketweave.

I have a 69 Super PA and a 1970 Super PA and this is what I do. One set of 4 holes is 2203 Spec, the other is Super Lead Spec!
    I LOVE the Super PAs!
