I'm looking at possibly buying a cab:

    upload_2019-6-14_7-51-56.png

the ad says it's a '74, but, it looks like small check, which would be later '70s, right? The guy that owns it, is a kid, but, I would imagine he knows something about gear, as he works for GC Hollywood/Sunset. (the head's not for sale). He says it's loaded w/ '85 V30s (1st year V30s were mfgr'd)

    rear:

it comes w/ road case. Almost looks like the rear panel is replaced, or recovered?

Anyway, this is all the images he's posted, I'm just wondering if this is a '74, & everything looks ok?

Yeah, the back panel is likely from another cab, appears to be JCM 800 era.

Not entirely sure but I think the small check appeared sometime in 1975 on US cabs. 74 does seeem too early for it.

I believe the large jack cup dates from 1978 until 1989 when I first saw the dual input stereo jack cups 1990- to the present day.

I may be wrong but another point, the small jack cup should be there if it’s 77 or before.

But if it’s got gold banded piping top n bottom, get it so long as the speakers are a good value.

If it’s a retolex job I would pass on it: looks like some corners missing

I'm guessing around 78 originally loaded with black backs.

    Late 70's small cheq grill.
Early JCM-800 elephant tolex back panel.
Not sure on cab tolex but different than back panel.
Take your favorite guitar & amp over there & crank it.
Take a meter & measure cab impedance first.
V30 that are broke in can be nice.
    V30 that are new suck.

Supposedly, this cab was a touring cab from Danzig. I'm not a fan, so that makes no difference to me, except, that, it's probably a good piece of gear. The price is middle road, at around $650. The V30's would be purchased in '85, then toured since. It comes w/ the Anvil road case.

    Here's the case:

I don't have any real cool old cab's, so, this would be a decent one for me.

    $650 with case ...... snatch dat !!!

You'd be lucky to get a new 4x12 case by itself for $650

Check the impedance tho they commonly are not what they say because people re-wire them.
    I learned the hard way.

Beater cabs look great. I'd clean it up and leave it as is, maybe load some greenies.

    well, I'd have to try the V30s 1st... :)...

I like V30s. If I could sell those V30s for an older set of British GB25s, I'd think about it...

Dog, I'm not a huge fan of the v30s, but I have V30s in the bottom of an early 70s large check 1982a beater cab and those G12H 75 Heritages loaded top. It sounds great with my 72 Major. Didn't know about x pattern when I loaded them many years ago, didn't occur to me. I don't see any reason to change them out. Give it a whirl as is, might be good to go. It's this guy behind the P-38.

I’ve never seen 4x12s so unpopular in 30 years of looking.

When I was younger $300 used was considered the going rate for decent ones.

Demand goes hand in hand w music trends which currently we have none.

Also modern stage volumes are low. Good PA systems make our half stacks almost redundant. I always prefer to gig mine but a 30-40w combo is usually more than adequate, sadly making a lot of our gear of historic curiosities. Bit like all our internal combustion engines cars will be in 10-20 years
