Welcome to the forum my friend Mitch
I have an old Hardwire CM-2 that works really well. It's derived from a tube screamer but more transparent with low and hi EQ knobs and a classic modern toggle switch. You can thicken the tone quite a lot if you turn up the level and low knob a little without creating mud on my DSL20hr.
Out of production, but you can get them used for a reasonable price.
Here's a video where they fiddle around with the EQ knobs more.
It still works well and sounds good. More versatile than a tone control by far.
It all depends on what sound you are after. I love the tone of Gary Moore and drive my DSL20H with a 2nd generation Marshall Guv'nor and love the tone. I run a CAE (Custom Audio Electronics/Bob Bradshaw) in the effects loop as a boost and I've got the tone I was looking for. I don't play any modern metal.
Suhr Koko Boost Reloaded. I love the mid boost settings with my 40CR. The bonus is that it tightens the amp a little without losing bass.
