I think the main reason Ace's tone is so difficult to nail down is there isn't any "signature" gear (aside from a Les Paul with a Super Distortion bridge pickup). In many interviews he just says he used a Marshall amp, never any specifics about what model, or which cab/speakers... He still says that to this day, just a Marshall.
If you are looking to his '70s tone, and you want a tube amp on a budget, the Marshall Origin looks like it would be a good place to start.

I think I get a decent Ace tone with my SG through an Origin 50H run through a 412 loaded with vintage greenbacks and blackbacks. I set the Master and Gain to 7, treble and precense cranked, bass at 4, mids at noon and contour cranked. No pedals

I forgot to add, I also own a DSL20 and that is not nearly as close to Ace’s or Angus’ tones, to gainy. Origin is by far the best budget Marshall for 60-70 rock tones (according to me).

But don’t overlook the speakers, I used V30s before and they just don’t cut it for that tone

Not sure if you've seen this specific video from Johan Segeborn but he is a diehard Ace Frehley early KISS tone aficionado. He really goes into a lot of detail about everything that likely contributes to Ace's tone.

I hate most YouTube cover videos but watched that one all the way through. 1) it’s about Ace! 2) guy has the technique down cold, 3) gorgeous Les Paul. Only negative: too much gain, certainly for early Ace tone. But that was fun to watch...

My ACE tone is a tobacco sunburst Epi Les Paul Std with a cheap Super Distortion knock off in the bridge, into an Origin 50H into an Origin 412B with two Greenbacks and two of the stock speakers.
