Being somewhat new to rolling 12AY7 tubes, might I be correct in my assessment that they are dramatically even less consistent from brand to brand the more popular/common 12AX7? I guess my real question is: "What are the good/sweet ones?"

FWIW, I've got a very old RCA that while intermittently noisy, has gloriously rich and complex tones, but both TAD Premium Select and High Grade have the kind of tone I'd expect from an alley cat who's has his nuts clipped off! Very sterile, no oomph and unpleasing! I don't want to buy 30 junk tubes to find one or two good ones!

    Just Curious?

    i guess with a 12ay7 you're messing with a tweed deluxe?

I hear ya friend! Here's some non-neutered tones.....

Not necessarily. Most Tweeds have at least one, if not more! In this case, I'm looking to tame a gain stage in a perticular Marshall. See this thread:

    http://www.marshallforum.com/threads/6v6-in-dsl-20.111478/

With that said, I'd like to share an observation. Gain added or subtracted in a particular stage rarely impacts the distortion level, distortion and/or overdrive of that stage, but rather the stages following it! This is why a really great clear and powerful (though not overdriven or distorted in and of itself) sounding tube can make a whole amp sound fantastic when used in the earliest gain satges!

Just My $.02 & Certainly Worth Far Less!

12ay7 is a good tube to use as V1 in a Marshall when you wanna play bass (or harmonica) out of it

About 10 years ago a guy in Switzerland gave me an old piece of dead communication equipment with about 8 Phillips 12ay7's in it ..... a good little score

A lot of old tubes for sale are noisy- snap crackle pop.
The tube tester cannot detect these noises.
These noises occur because the tube is old and used, not in good condition. (fished out of a junk pile)
A lot of so called: "NOS" tubes are just old used tubes. Not actually NOS.
The 12AY7 is just as consistent as any other tube, when it's NEW. And does not ordinarily or intermittently crackle.

"I don't want to buy 30 junk tubes to find one or two good ones!"

Same here, but that's the case when you buy all these old junk "NOS" "tested" tubes.

My advice is: don't bay any "tested" old tubes, it's a complete waste of time and money. Be very suspicious of those who sell this junk.

There are legitimate NOS tubes (pretty rare)_ but you probably won't be buying them from e bay.
The minute somebody says the tube is "tested," that's the warning to AVOID the purchase.

I bought 3 New Production Electroharmonix 12AY7 and they are all consistent. They sound good in anything I put them in.

So Amp, you are saying just do not purchase from eBay than?

I ask because those tubes you pointed to are “tested” tubes.

    What model and year amplifier?
    What tube position?

12AY7/6072 are good and great tubes. I do not have any current production but have old stock and old new stock that sound great. My old new stock are Groove Tubes which are probably Chinese or Slovakian.

Just like other preamp tubes they may have a slight character voicing but over all a 12AY7 sounds like a 12AX7 but lower gain at same volume settings.

6072 is militarized version of 12AY7.
5751 stands on its own but in most of these musical amplifier circuits it operates almost like a 12AX7/ECC83 type.

6072 is a low microphonic version of the 12AY7, 6072 I think has a higher heater current.
6072A is an upgrade with less leakage for computers, these are both a bit HIFI for a Marshall, I use them in my Phone stage for my record deck.

Annoying thing is, Mullard never made any 12AY7 :(

As far as used preamp tubes go...I buy 'em up cheap because nobody wants to trust it is still good. Occasionally, it will not be up to snuff.
But 9 out of 10 will sound better than any CP tube, unless you are looking for high gain. Most old stock tubes were rated for what... some 5000 hours!

I'd take a shot on an OS tube being solid rather than a CP tube sounding great...but only at CP tube pricing. Never pay NOS prices! Scams usually!

I'm a huge fan of organ pull tubes (speakers as well). they both tend to be gently used with a lot of life in em. grandma didn't crank her organ up in smoky bars and whatnot

Yeah IME dropping big dollars on tubes is usually a mistake. My main issue with tubes is microphonics and you get that with all of them, just luck of the draw

I have had some of the new production EH 12AY7. I thought they were pretty good actually. That was a good 10 years ago or so though. They were right up there with the old blackplate and other NOS ones I have.
