New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Just got my 40C yesterday. I play a Gibson Les Paul Standard. For the life of me I can't get the sound I am looking for. I play Kiss, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, Cinderella, you get the point. What settings should I be using? I feel like my Line 6 gives me better sound, so I know something is wrong. Been playing on Ultra Gain channel. Please, any help is appreciated.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Use ultra gain on lead 1

Mids 11 o'clock treble 9 o'clock bass 12 o'clock... Gain DEPENDING ON VOLUME, but if your volume is low, try 10-11 o'clock...

Next, throw away your line 6...

Put you tone knobs to half on the lp....

I have the same rig as you, also throw in a JJ TUBE IN v1

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

I play mostly 80's hard rock too and use the following on the 100H.

Ultra Gain 1
Triode mode

Dial numbers (not clock)
Res: 6
Pres: 2-3
T-shft: Out
Bass: 5
Mid: 6
Trbl: 2.5
Vol: .5 - 2 (@ home)
Gain: 6, sometimes 5 and pushed w/ an SD-1

I should add that when I have the opportunity to play louder (volume @ 4-7), I change the settings. Basically, I reduce the resonance and bass, increase the presence and treble, and adjust the gain slightly to fit.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

How long have you been playing guitar?

Is this your first tube amp?

Asking for settings and naming 12 different bands, all sounding wildly different doesn't give us much to start with. It sounds to me like you're used to digital amps and your ears haven't had time to adjust to a proper tube amp.

Like your humor on the 12 different bands. Was just trying to give a little feedback on the style music I play. Been playing bass for 10 years, guitar for six months. I have adapted really quickly. And yes, this is my first tube amp. Appreciate the feedback.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

I also go for the Kiss/Ace Frehely thing and these this is how I dial in my DSL40C ...

GUITAR:
Assuming you have a guitar with humbuckers, use the bridge pickup with Volume and Tone on 10.

AMP:
Start on the Ultra Channel on Lead 1.
Crank the Gain all the way up.
Set Treble, Mid, and Bass at 12:00.
Set Presence, and Resonance to 0

Play, and take treble down until the harshness is reduced, then back off your Guitar Volume until you have nice definition when palm muting. Tweak the resonance if you want more thump, and a tiny bit of presence. Now, you can put a volume pedal in the effects loop. At solo time I floor the pedal and pinky up the Guitar volume. You don't beed crap load of effects with this amp.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Try everything at 5 and dial to taste, gain 5 to 7. 40 watt pentode mode. Drop better preamp tubes in and break it in loud!~ dont use thin picks like tortex, use good mogami type cables and adjust pickups to taste. Soooo many factors come into play!!

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

might as well chip in here lol
Pres:5
Treble: 3
Mids:6
Bass: 3
Res: 0
Crunch button in gain: 5
Ultra button out gain : 6
Depending on stage and how it reacts to the amp the bass and pres vary.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

I have another idea...

The fact that you still prefer the tone of your Line 6 amp (a modeler) gives me a strong clue... For the exact music you are trying to play (80s hard rock/hair metal) you would do well with adding the following effects pedals (stompboxes) to the amp:

Drive Pedal - between guitar and amp's input combined with the high-gain channel on a low to medium setting.
Delay Padal - in the FX loop - a little slapback with a short delay time (30ms) will give the 80s searing solo sound and also work for rhythm.

I'll leave you to decide which pedals but I use a Boss SD-1 (overdrive) and a Donner Yellow Fall (digital delay). These are only about 65 GBP or around 80 USD to buy all in. They work great with all Marshall Tube amps.

Nothing will nail the tone better that you are looking for than to do it the way they did it back in the 80s, i.e. enhancing an amp with pedals!

It can be galling to find you buy a lovely new amp and can't get the tone you want without some extra pedals.... A lot of purists like to go 'straight in' but I never do. Yes, you can do without pedals, but theoretically speaking you can do without an amp if you want - just tawng away in a quiet place!

There's good reason why the pedal market is so huge!

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

I find with Marshall's less is more. Start with gain on 11 o'clock, mid at 9, bass at 9 and treble at 10. Set presence to 9 also. Also, is the amp brand new. If so the speakers will sound crappy for awhile. The speaker is actually a big deal. I don't know what the put in a 40c but a G12T-75 or Vintage 30 can be had pretty cheap used on eBay. That will be a big upgrade. Bigger upgrade would be a G12-65 but pretty pricey even used.

With Marshall's, less is more.....don't go crazy with the gain.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Or try treb, mids, bass at 4 and presence at 6 to add in highs, resonance 5 . Just tried it at low volume, seem good and have to try loud myself

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

It's cheating but what I've done to find slash tones is open my amplitude slash kit on my iPad and use those same settings on my 40c, delay, etc. It's damn close let me tell you.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Couple settings I find sound great...

Treble and presence at 9 o'clock
od channel gain at 9:30
clean/crunch channel gain maxxed

other settings at noon.

My amp has the Creamback speaker, excellent speaker IMHO.

Re: New here-Need settings help for DSL40C

Hi All,

I did a gig with this thing, and it was plenty loud enough. It takes forever to cook to the right temperature though. Until it gets there, the distortion is kinda farty. Sounds great after that.
