Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

Does anyone remember the Randy Rhoads all-in-one pedal board from the early 80's? A friend of mine had one in those days and though they were highly coveted then, it's the only one I ever saw in person. Does anyone have one/seen one?

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

Here's some questions for you> where were the adjustments for the EQ pedal in that board? under the cover, never to be adjusted again? so others couldn't see the settings and copy?
why was the word 'FUZZ' used?
.
Vman, you should find yourself a copy of ozzy's 'The LIVE EP', you will hear suicide solution played with the 'Cascade gain' setting on the white amp, 'live' in the UK back in the day. this is clearly NOT the 'tribute' tone. (which I think you seem disappointed with)
If Randy had 1 amp with the 'mod' and he needed 3 more amps to do the show, shouldn't he just plug them all into the standard input ? It was just a 'live' show to be forgotten forever.
In the studio, 'S.A.T.O' was clearly cascade gain.
besides from the information we have, I don't think he could have the money to have all the amps he used, modded.
.
Robert, are you going to make the pedal board?

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

Regarding his amps. I saw him on the Diary Tour and in addition to the 3 full stacks for his backline he also had 2 half stacks as side fills.

Randy's Mom Delores and his Bro Kelli have it in storage. According to Brad Gillis when he subbed in affter RR's death it was a nightmare and completely un-reliable. Gillis even went so far as to say its Haunted.

If im not mistaken Randy hated it as well.

that was Bernie Torme that said that. if I remember right Brad was using Mesa cabs & mk2 heads. Randy's stuff was already packed & gone by then except for the stage clothes which wouldn't fit him.

It was just like you say. With no individual units, just a bunch of actuators like a Zoom unit. A consumer product. I'm not talking about his actual stage rig, but a consumer pedal board sold in Randy's name in the early 80's.

he ran the eq w/ the mids humped & never messed w/ it. I doubt Randy cared who saw what as far as settings went. He was always insecure about his sound anyway according to him.

FUZZ was probably easier to read on the pedalboard & growing up in the 60's & 70's "fuzz" was still the term everyone used.

the live ep--the picture disc is what you're referring to & also the over the mountain/I don't know live 7 & 12" singles were recorded before he had the amp modded. also,on the Diary album the amps are not cascaded. the tribute album has the cascaded amps. If you look @ pics from the Ridge Farm sessions he's only using a black amp.

the 2 white ones were cascaded & the black one stock.he didn't like the mod so he used the other input according to his tech Pete Mertens.
also, the white ones didn't come out until 1982-Marshall 20th Anniversary series.

I hope that answered your questions.
p.s. I didn't see vman in this thread...

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

that big stage pedal board must have taken ages to build, I was tempted to make it a few times but chose not to. It looks like something that you start and the job gets bigger and bigger.
My amp tech was working on Pink floyds 'dark side of the moon' era pedal board an I saw inside it, it looked like a 'klingon' warp engine computer wiring. really complex. Not like 'Skywalkers' X-Wing fighter, they are more simply wired.
It was also large, just like the red sequoia tree you see when you walk in yosemite park. (the other guys get this 'joke on me')

it was also noisy as hell which is why it's referred to as the "chip pan" - sounded like chips(fries) fying according to Ozzy.

these days you could build one that would be a lot quieter or just add a g-string or decimator to it..

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

I just looked at the picture dics version and there is no pic of randy, but if you have 'The 598 Series' special low price the back cover has a 'live' picture and you'll see the white full stack and the black full stack being used and you can clearly see the top right input is being used! - the cascaded gain input, thats why the gain in the sound has much more 'Growl' and 'drive'. (too loud for full band practice at ridge farm) recorded 1980- October, blizzard of Ozz UK tour. canada pressing.
If you can get yourself BATS HEAD SOUP, live in cleveland 1981, that recording is awesome too! this sounds like lots of amps at the same time. (by this time RR has had enough of the 5minute solo spot and races though the solo very quickly)

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

Yep noisey chip fryer music! that is the current racing through the amp that is making the 'noise', is supposed to be there. one of the major reasons marshall changed the amp design. (but some guys are sick of me saying it)

Re: Randy Rhoads Pedal Board?

there was one item back in about 1989 that I could NOT buy. It was a 4 album Ozzy with Randy live concert show recorded for a Radio station, top quallity and it was $250 when a normal album was like $9. I've never seen it anyware again. lets hope some more of this stuff is released. they say on the RR facebook page that there is a full concert filmed on real film, but they also say they don't think it will ever be released. BUT well never know if this is 'BS'.

I wish I had a 1959rr. They claimed they were available for sale when they came out , but none ever hit any of the midwestern shops I frequent, and I never buy gear I have not played.

If you can get yourself BATS HEAD SOUP, live in cleveland 1981, that recording is awesome too! this sounds like lots of amps at the same time. (by this time RR has had enough of the 5minute solo spot and races though the solo very quickly)
was that a rerelease of the pic disc? I have the original from when it was released & nope- Randy ain't on it.

No. I'm talking about the consumer all-in one Randy Rhoads pedal board from the early 80's. We were reading a "kerrang" (which has the ad, I'm trying to find it) for it. My buddy HAD to have it because it was labeled a "randy Rhoads"He called all the stores in the tri-state and ended up ordering one thru the "Pied Piper".Similar to some of the zoom pedal made over the years that look like pro pedal boards but actually are all in ones.A guy I used to know bought one in those days from "The Pied Piper" in Huntington WVA for the large sum (in those days) of $300. A guy at a music store her in Indy has one and he is supposed to dig it out for me sometime this week. he also has an original stereo "Rockman" that I'm going to look at. The last time I saw or touched one (rr all-in-one effects board)was in carbondale Ill about 4 years ago. The mom and pop store wanted $1000 for it.

I saw Rhoads twice, once in Charleston WVA for the "blizzard" tour, another in Huntington WVA for "diary" one of the times Vandenberg was the opening act. I've been a fan of theirs ever since. I also saw the "Speak of the devil" tour shortly thereafter.
