Crate V-33...

Hey guys. I know alot of guys "look down" on the V-series of crate amps, but i got a "sweet" deal on a brand new in the box V-33H...and the stock "Soveteks" has gotta go! lol!(got plenty of "N.O.S" EL34's&12AX7's.) The booklet that came with it stated that with a "re-tube",the power valves needs to be biased...but i always thought that EL34's were "cathode-based" valve, and did not need biasing. So what gives here???

Re: Crate V-33...

You have to bias the V33. Some amps are fixed bias/cathode bias and all you have to do is put matched power tubes in and play. My Haze, Valveking, and Blues Custom 30 are plug and play. Biasing is based on amp design, not the type of tube. Also, I think the V33 uses EL84s instead of EL34s.

Re: Crate V-33...

Hey thanks Bro.Blue. Sorry for the "switcheroo" on the numbers for the valves(i know it takes 84's...)i was typing fast. Well,i'm hoping there's a "bias" pot inside...i hate to shell out money, when i can do it myself.

I don't think there is a re-bias pot adjustment with a EL84 head (fixed bias). Do some checking before you start tearing it apart.

Try asking Bob at = http://www.eurotubes.com He might have a simple replacment idea for you without biasing.

Re: Crate V-33...

When I had my V33H both the manual and customer service told me it needed to be re-biased. To be fair, though, I only had mine for a couple of months and ditched it when it became evident the gain channel was unusable. The clean channel was superb.
