Lee Jackson Owners Unite!

I own 2 Metaltronix M1000 heads and an XLA1000.

Any other Lee Jackson fans out there?

Sweet! What kind of tubes are you running in your XLS?

Re: Lee Jackson Owners Unite!

Currently i ve been using some spare 5881 i had laying around but when money allows i will try some e34l's to get some more of that marshall flavour. As for preamp tubes, in the gp1000 i like the jj's (strange huh? in every other unit they sound dull - in this one they sound smooth) and in the xls a mix of mullard, ruby and eh.

How do the M1000's compare to the XLA? Which one do you like best? I think the XLA is 2 identical channels that can be set from clean to really dirty, right? I have no experience with those but i find the XLS extra versatile (due to the dual gain pots and the mid shift selector). Beautiful sounding units. I was lucky enough to find one in Europe!

By the way, i know Lee is going to release another preamp sometime - the gp2. I think it will have a dedicated clean channel this time. I hope it sounds as good as the original!

Re: Lee Jackson Owners Unite!

I find myself playing the XLA more. It is a direct copy of the Marshall amps that Lee was modding and building for Steve Vai, George Lynch, Paul Gilert, etc.

But the M1000 is great too! All of Lee's stuff is the best!

And yes, the XLA is basically a single channel amp with switchable master volume/preamp controls.

Well, the great thing about Lee's stuff is, you can contact him directly and he will repair it. What builder will repair his own stuff 15, 20, 25 years later!?!?!

I wouldn't be afraid to buy one of the Ampeg amps as I'm sure Lee can update any parts and fix any issues that the amp has. I believe the main issue with those was that Ampeg insisted on using some cheap parts to keep costs down.
