Hi all been enjoying the forum for awhlie. Its great so decided to join. I don't know if this is the right place for this or not, but here goes.
I got a tech question? I have a Peavey classic 20 amp i really like the sound of especially with a lap steel i own. What kind of mod would have to be done to give it more clean headroom? I've tried lower gain preamp tubes in v1. That don't do it, I just have to turn the volume up higher on the dial to get the same volume. cheers! |

Re: classic 20
Before doing any mods, try calling Eurotubes or Tube Depot and tell them what brand el84s you have in there now. They might have a set with more headroom.
By the way, you're keeping the volume (gain) knob low and turning up the master volume, correct?

Re: classic 20
Thanks for the info.Thats correct, master on 12 and gain/volume at number 3. i put in a set of el84s Electro harmonix first of the year after old ones, i believe Sovtec, developed a popping sound. The amp sounds awesome with the steel but will start breaking up anything after 3. I mic it at rehearsal hooked to a 212 extension cab. but thought it would be easier to set if it had more headroom. I'm not a tech. Thought there might be a generalized changing of componet values(for all tube amps) that would do the trick. I'll check out the tube stores you suggest.

Re: classic 20
Hemi, keep in mind that early breakup is one of the features of EL84 tubes. If you can't find el84s with more headroom, you probably don't want to try modding your way out of it. If you otherwise really love the sound of the amp, maybe you're better off trying out the classic 30. I can tell you mine gets pretty loud on the clean channel before any significant breakup. Definitely try it out first, though. Loud to me may not be the same as it is to you.

Re: classic 20
yea, i've been thinking the same thing. I bought the c20 new and its a great little practice amp. I just bought the haze 40 and i love that sound too. I run my tele thru that. I got my trusty jtm 30 but the other guitarist uses that, as the bassist uses his 412Roadmaster. Maybe taxtime will see a new c30 or c50, cause that lap steel sounds so good thru that c20.
