okay, so I found a poweramp, and the guy will sell it to me for a very good price. BUT! without a preamp theres no point of having a power amp!!!
So I found this really fucking awesome digitech preamp! seriously its that awesome! BUT IT WAS SOOOLD!!!!!!! so that pissed me offf.... Now, I have the opportunity to order shit from music stores...Its gonna be more expensive but its good. Now, what preamps is there out there? I mean the JMP-1 of course, but those are rare to find. Re: Preamps Out There?
JMP-1's are pretty common place. I don't know about cheap but there are plenty of them around.
ADA MP-1's are pretty cool. A lot of the old Testament stuff was done with those, countless other records as well. I really dig these preamps, if I ever went rack I would have one of these in a heartbeat. I don't know much about all the programming involved, I just know they sound good. Engl Modern Rock Tube Preamp. This thing is pretty intense, the name is quite deceiving. The gain can be monstrous but it's all usable gain, it's not muddy or fizzy like high gain digitech stuff and has more available distortion than the JMP-1 and MP-1. Better yet it's an all tube signal path. I've known two guys to use them and both of them played in extreme metal bands. They are very responsive to your poweramp as well, they will have a big impact on the overall tone. I don't really know much about any other rack pre's, these are the only ones I've had hands on experience with.

Re: Preamps Out There?
Oh yeah, some other pretty interesting preamps are the Mesa/Boogie Triaxis and they also make a preamp version of the Dual Rectifier. Don't know how available they are but if I were to go rack I would always keep my options open to multiple preamps. Just make sure you buy a good poweramp to base everything around. If you don't like a preamp you can always sell it or just keep it around for more options.

Re: Preamps Out There?
Noice.
But I've said this before and I'll say it again. I don't see why everyone says the JMP-1 is so hard to find, I see them on ebay in good condition more than JCM 800s, and usually for like $500 AUD

Re: Preamps Out There?
I liked the tone of the JMP-1 that I used at one time but I still had to use an effects processor with it because when I went to an all rack rig the main reason I changed to that type of rig anyways was because I wanted to clean up my rig and it be more streamlined. Using pedals with a rack rig wasnt going to work. So I tried an ADA MP-1 then went to a TC Electronic GMajor. Wasn't satisfied with either setup. And I never liked my tones when I used a Mesa Triaxis/2:90 with an effects processor, same as with the Peavey Rockmaster that I ran into a Peavey Classic 120. I tried as many combinations of preamp, effects processor and power amp as I could find but found that I just preferred using preamp/effects processors that are all in one unit with power amps. And this is coming from a player who used Marshall,Mesa and Peavey heads for years and years.
So,now I'm using a Digitech GSP1101 in one rig and a Fractal AX-FX Ultra in my 2nd rig and I like both for what each can do. I have found the tones I was hearing in my head in these two units. I'm using the 1101 in a modern metal band and the Ultra in a techno/industrial/metal/fusion band. The 1101 works awesome with my 9200 power amp into 1960 cab on stereo. I'm constantly being asked what head I use after shows and I point to the rack and say 'models'. The coolest part about the 1101 is being able to integrate the processor with the JMP-1 or a head and use either the processors preamp or the JMP or heads preamp. They sync up well. With the Fractal unit tho,I needed to try a different setup since I use it with a different kind of band. For my PA feed at venues I pretty much always run direct to the board with the Fractal unit using its cab sims. For my stage sound the 9200/1960 rig just didnt work at all in a techno/industrial band where I'm the only guitarist mixing with a keyboard/synth/sampler/DJ player who does the bass parts with bass pedals and a drummer who uses an electronic drum set. I was stepping all over the rest of the band no matter how low the volume on the 9200 was. So now for my stage rig I'm using a Rocktron Velocity 100watt power amp running into a couple of Rocktron Velocity 1x12 cabs. I dont like it much at all but I'm getting less complaints from my bandmates and no complaints from the sound guys. Pussies!!!

Re: Preamps Out There?
Digitech site most likely has the manual for PDF download and probably firmware updates too.
Digitechs SoundCommunity forum for info too.

Re: Preamps Out There?
so the transaction didnt work. The guy was resetting the preamp, and it died while he was doing it. So it didnt work.
So we talked and stuff and he cancelled the transaction and refunded my money. So now I have to look forward to another amp? hmmm I have seen the ADA MP-1 but it seems to have quiet a lot of distortion and not that warmness that the JMP-1 has |

Re: Preamps Out There?
Speaking from experience I love the JMP-1. As far as how it stacks up to other preamps out there I couldn't tell ya since the JMP-1 had the high gain sound I wanted and I never tried anything else. But the JMP-1 is a great high gain preamp with a stereo parallel loop and both setereo cab simulated and non-simulated direct outs. And it's user friendly as well.
It sux that the new RoHS standards are preventing them from making them anymore. But as was mentioned above, there are plenty of them out there being sold.

Re: Preamps Out There?
I have an ADA MP2 better than and MP1 IMHO...but harder to find and no mods that i have ever seen but the 10 tube voicings all sound great
I also have a JFA modded Peavey Rockmaster...Awesome metal preamp my favorite low dollar preamp was the Jackson JX-3...put an eq in the loop and it comes alive...with out it its high gain mid booster with no very useable lows but they can be had for $100 My Rockmaster was $225 before the mod the MP2 was like $250 i think.....right now i dont use either one of them sold the Jackson and might throw the Peavey on E-bay in the next week or so the ADA will never leave my (Shit i dont use at the moment) rack |

Re: Preamps Out There?
Got this from the gear page and thought it was appropriate LOL!
* Even if you and I have identical models, mine's better...yours sucks * If I once owned it, it was fantastic until I sold it to you...now it sucks * Your ultra-custom, one-off, super high end amp made from the finest components isn't as nice as mine...it sucks * If I buy an amp from you, it's better when it gets here and the one you bought to replace it...sucks ** The sooner you learn to accept these facts, the sooner you'll get along with everyone here. *** Feel free to make necessary additions. |
