Amp Came to Life!

I have discovered that IMO the effects loop SUCKS on my 2001 Bogner Shiva. Could not seem to get much volume before clipping occured. I stopped using anything (Quadraverb) in the loop and holy shit what was a great sounding (but not loud enough) hot rodded 2203-ish toy turned into a Freaking Beast! Inspiration has hit while playing dry without effects. I am such a tone chasing head hunter. I adore all of my amps for different reasons and this one is clear yet saturated with the 2203 mid hump.

But alas, the signal and tone goes to shit on this amp if the loop is used.

Thought I would share this observation with anyone thinking of buyingz a Shiva. Again this is a 2001 EL34 Dual Reverb model. The reverb does not work, I believe due to the foot pedal. I need to get off of my lazy ass and repair it.

The preamp is loaded with 7025's.

I need a couple more 1960BV cabs. Running 2 heads into a split 412 always sounds bad to my ear. I need dedicated cabs.

Sorry for the RANT...

David

Re: Amp Came to Life!

Interesting David....thanks for sharing. Having a few different amps can really keep the quest for tone fresh!!

I think 7025's are awesome pre-amp tubes!

I have always read about tone sucking but this is the first time that it has been so obvious.

In fact, this is the first time I have enjoyed playing a dry signal at all volume levels on a single amp other than the JCM 800 2210. Much like the 2210, this amp compresses very nicely.

Absolutely. I am very pleased if only for the moment lol. JK. I am now looking at a 1981 JMP version of the 2203 but I have tried "several" JMP/JCM 2203's and not quite been sold on them to include the first one I bought in 1982. But maybe, see if the guy will drop the $. Point is this amp now sounds like what I tried to mod a couple of 2203's into until I use the loop then it becomes a Line 6! No shit, really, like a Line 6 toy.

I am sure Mr Bogner would not like to hear that but he must be aware.

Re: Amp Came to Life!

i played a brand new Shiva a couple of months back, and i didnt think it sounded very nice on the dirty channel. The clean channel however is absolutely stunning. Very pristine !

The dirty channel to me sounded very grainy. I dont think the loop was engaged as this was a demo amp in a shop..

maybe it was just my shitty fingers, but seriously my JVM ate it !

Re: Amp Came to Life!

yeah i can see that. the rectoverb has a really shitty loop too but without anything in the loop it's a frickin BEAST.

now that i know what you like in terms of tone you should give an alchemist a shot. it's smooth and clear. i am not saying buy one but i think you'd like them and for the price....they're very much a sleeper.

NR, just wondering .....

what if you run a jumper cable from the send to the return, does that make it sound worse, or no difference?

Hmm good point. Surprised I didn't think of that myself. I was so excited and moved with the spirit of tone my mind went blank.

I will check it out when I get home.

Re: Amp Came to Life!

Sounds like the loop needs to be re-engineered. Thats a shame such a great sounding amp and cant use the loop or reverb. I bet a good tech could remedy both.

Nothing grainy about this amp. Less headroom than the 2203 which goes hand and hand with more gain.

Very much welcome.

It seems Shivas before 2006 need this addressed and later models were modified to adapt.

Some line level adjustments would be nice.???

Re: Amp Came to Life!

Well now, guess this very well may explain why someone before me continued to blow fuses and any other issues (Reverb) that may be present.

I will fab a cable this afternoon.

Thanks again.

The thing is, I called and talked to Charlie at Bogner not once, not twice but three damned times about various things and this solution never came up. I did mention clipping when using the loop. We nalso discussed reported issues that I never had but for the most part we ID year and discussed the reverb issue. IDK, makes me wonder.

I mean WTF, lol.

Re: Amp Came to Life!

In Bogners defense sort of, I think most if not all of their amplifier loops are set up for +4dBm although it is not really specifically mentioned. It would have been nice if Bogner incorporated level adjusters.

David, your Quadraverb should be able to to handle the +4 if things are set up right. Maybe if it were setup prior for a lower line level the new higher line level from the Shiva will put it into OVERLOAD.

Yes Sir. There is a input and output volume control on the front of the Alesis in addition to clipping led's. However, I still can not get the high volume without out clipping when using the loop. In addition, it really clips when on the clean channel and toggling between single coil and hum bucket.
