amp sounds so lousy

My Mark V is in for service so I decided this would be a good time to pick up a combo to use as a stereo effects amp with it. Just wanted something with a good clean sound. I bought a Minty used Hot Rod Deluxe.

While the Marks away I have been playing it.. total shit! I hate this ****ing amp.
I'll keep it around to see how it does with the Mark for a week or so. If its still sounds lousy.. its history.

On the other hand my delay cost me more than the amp.. what should I expect?
What I bought I suppose..

What I bought I suppose.. an ass amp for sure.
Brother, it may need servicing. I feel Hot Rod Deluxe amps sound pretty good as a rule. I like Fenders though. Maybe new tubes and biasing could kick it back to life. Good luck either way if you keep it or not!

I checked the bias. It was at 54. typical.. I set it to 68. Its better but not that much. I'll dump it for $300.00 and buy the Budda...

Re: amp sounds so lousy

I bought a hot rod when they first came out. It was the one that is 40 watts with 1 12". I had it about one month before I finally accepted it sounded like garbage. I don't get it with these amps. They just don't sound good. The clean is not very good at all, especially if you like the clean you get from other fender amps. The word I would use to describe it would be "lackluster". The OD on them is worse than a cheap disto box. Just nasty. They sure sell lots of them though. I hope I am not being a dick coming down on these turds, but they stink. I don't understand how the same company that makes a Deluxe or a Vibroverb makes one of these. I also hate the super sonic, just not quite as much. Sorry, rant over.
