So I sold my Marshall
After a good 18 months of trying - and failing - to get the particular sound I wanted from my DSL50, I have finally caved in and sold it in favor of my new Mesa Boogie Roadster head.
The Roadster is just immense and I've yet to find a bad tone with it! It sounds enormous compared to my Marshall, and I'm absolutely loving it! I was a bit sad to ditch Marshall after 15+ years, but I'm so blown away by this amp - not just the tones, but the sheer out-and-out quality and features - I think I'm now a 100% Boogie convert. However, I still think a wall of Marshall's looks waaaay cooler than a wall of Boogies ever will!

Re: So I sold my Marshall
now sell that for a Framus and yo'll know true bliss
![]() I liked Mesa too and still do but for high gain rock and metal they (and i mean the rectos up to mark IV) just don't touch Framus Dragon and Cobra tops imo (and many others). Glad you're happy though. I liked my Mesa's and DSL100's but ultimately the Framus' won out. I do plan on getting a couple 800 series amps and an MKIII though. |

Aww yeah man, I've heard great things about Framus - I wanted to try one when I was shopping around for the Mesa, but sadly they seem to be as rare as rocking horse shit over here in the UK

You get all the control and girth of a mesa (build quality's pretty good too) ad the tone somewhere in between. they can do mesa, marshall and peavey sounds as well as many others but they do their own thing well. a properly working Framus is literally jaw dropping the first time you use one in person

Re: So I sold my Marshall
Your problem here is you're an either or kind of guy. You can keep the Mesa but that shouldn't prevent you from owning another, better fit for you, Marshall. I just feel like my rig is missing something if there isn't at least one Marshall present. Mesa's are awesome too though. Don't have an amp from them but my vertical 2x12 is incredible. Get yourself a Class 5 before they disappear.

Re: So I sold my Marshall
Of course I dig my Mesa but my Marshall has awesome Mids and saturated growl. It is my go to work horse. Not all companies have a outstanding model however all companies do have some disappointments. I go for smooth saturation and have found in in American, British & German amps.
Glad you like your Mesa. David

Re: So I sold my Marshall
i do switch my marshall amps w/5150.. 5150 done the job well for my music.. but i cant lie for myself, marshall is the best tone amps i ever had.. and i really miss them. now i've just bought an SLX to recover my marshall tone need!.. maybe the combine between 5150 and SLX is the best tone+gain that im really looking for

Re: So I sold my Marshall
I use my Marshalls more than Mesa. If I played more death metal I'd probably use the Mesa alot more.
Mesa Roadster amps are great, so you're on a winner.

Re: So I sold my Marshall
It's interesting...
I have no problem specifically with Mesa I've just never heard a guitarist LIVE using a a Mesa rig that ever sounded any good to me I've heard albums recorder with Mesa Rigs that I loved but live has been a different story

At the end of the day, they all have their place. I'm not one to get into discussions of which is better....After 100 years is Coke really better than Pespsi....No, it's all about user perference. Personally some of the best tones I've heard (both my own and proffesionals) have been blending amps via running them in stereo or using a power amp of one amp to drive the preamp of another kind. James Hetfield and Adam Jones comes to mind.

Re: So I sold my Marshall
You must of been playing a different amp, dude.
![]() While I'm not a fan of a Recto, they can be pretty ****ing mid-heavy. For some reason, though, every Recto user, and their dog, likes to put the Mids on 2. ![]() Another thing about Recto's is that they have a very strange EQ section. Very tricky to dial in. No offense to you David, from what I heard, you can dial in a Mesa properly.

Re: So I sold my Marshall
Congrabs. I love mine. The mode that people seem to find hardest to dial in is the Brit mode. The trick is to crank the treble and gain up, then make the tone smoother by backing down the presence control, and also balancing between the master and output controls. If there is too much gain, turn down the gain knob, not the treble...

Re: So I sold my Marshall
Hey how about Brad Gillis on that live Ozzy tribute album back in the 80's. That was a Mk2 simul class Boogie and the tone is 100% killer.
