best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

hello im looking at tube amps and ive been checking out fenders, i saw that the hotrod deluxe's, but everyone says they're terrible. i was wondering what's a good tube amp for under 1000? (preferably cheaper) i play small sized gigs, but i still want volume, i have a marshall 50-watt solid state and an epiphone les paul.
My favortie bands to lay are led zeppelin, hendrix, red hot chili peppers and nirvana. i need something that's a good pedal platform also.

any help is much apreciated, thanks

That really depends on just how much gain you want. I like the Fender Blues Deluxe myself and wouldn't mind having one, except that I can do pretty much the exact same thing on my Fender Mustang amps with the Deluxe Reverb amp model. *shrugs* Fraction of the cost.

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

well i might do some high gain stuff with this amp, like randy rhoads,
so i just need a good tube amp with lots of head room, a nice clean channel(why im thinking about fender), and something that wont give me feed back when i kick the distortion pedals on, would the hotrod deluxe/ fender blues deluxe work?

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

The Blues boxes by Fender only have a medium amount of gain when fully cranked open. Think AC/DC at the highest. So they have TONS of clean headroom and roll back off of the guitar's volume pot very well. If you're using pedals to get all the extra gain, then by all means go for it, but keep in mind that most of Fender's Deluxe Reissue amps are only rated around 40 watts. It might not be enough to keep up with a louder band.

You might prefer the Hot Rod Deluxe. Check this page out.

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

the 4x10 tweeds sound great imo, and my very limited exp with them. i played one in a store one day, and was immediately very impressed.

4x10's might be an important ingredient...as well as a decent circuit. you can find them used (the current production models, not vintage), for 600 to 800 usually.

and even the hotrods are not bad amps. the gain channel is not so great, but the normal channel sounds nice turned up, and has some nice growl.

the hotrod has been fenders best selling amp of all time, there has to be a reason for that. and the reason you hear so many poor reviews has to do with A) there are so many of them out there, and B) there are many configurations. 1x12, 2x12, and 4x10.

again, if i were in the market, i would look for a 2x12 or 4x10. i think they are a nice amp and def worth looking into. no offense, but it will sound miles better than your SS marshall. i promise.

the black tolex hotrods can be found VERY reasonable. $400 if your patient for a 2x12 or 4x10. look on craigslist, they are there all the time.

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

wow thanks alot see i dont plan on using the distortion channels on the amps. i want something with a loud clean channel and then put my pedals through that, are there any other good amps aside of fenders let me list everyhting i want in an amp:
- headroom before breakup
- nice pedal platform
-at least 30 watts
-wont give me much feedback with high gain pedals
- under 1000 dollars(used is an option)

do either of these amps fit this criteria, are there any other amps u recomend?

Twin Reverbs have a ton of headroom.

But why not get a Marshall? A 1959 will have plenty of headroom and will make your pedals sound like a freight train...

I used to play a Twin Reverb back in the '70s. Then I got a hold of a Quad Reverb and was in heaven. Took me a year before I realized it had a push/pull volume control...

If under a grand is your criteria, then I would look for a silverface which you can get for well under a grand. Deluxe Reverbs (20 watts or so 1x12), Pro Reverbs (45-70 watts 2x12) Super Reverb (45w 4x10) Twin Rverbs (85-100W 2x12) and all great amps. You will need a pedal with them for gainy stuff.
But for a grand, you have so many options, Marshall used for TSl combos, maybe a JVM combo, JCM800 or 900 combos, Mesa, Peavey (a new 6505+ 1x12 is $579), Blackstar

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

hey sal, havent seen you in a while.

thats a good point, a marshall DSL or TSL can be had for well under a grand used, and those have decent clean channels, plus the gain channels which you may also find useful down the road.

natural tube distortion is much more pleasant than stompbox distortion imo...but, thats just preference.

the DSL/TSL will give you both options, at roughly the same ballpark pricewise.

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

the supersonic combo sounded pretty damn good to me but it's 22 watts & right @ $1000. it's plenty loud for gigging.
i didn't try it w/ pedals but it sounded really good as is w/ my p90 les paul.

The only off-the-shelf Fender amps they make nowdays ,that I would buy ,are the Pro jr and the bassman reissue

You can get a used bassman reisue in the $650 neighborhood ,problem solved

With the examples you gave...I'm not really sure why you are thinking a Fender? Fenders are known for their great clean sounds...but that doesn't sound like what you are looking for. It you want lots of headroom with tons of versatility, I would recommend a DSL 100. You'd probably be living in the green/crunch mode and loving it. Lots of them around too for a decent price.

RIvera R55 or 55 twelve.

2 channels each with boost and a great reverb.

used from 650 to 800.00

dripping with tone!

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

I have a new post in the cellar @ the man cave jamming both my LP & LP W/ P90's & (not on there) a custom tele through a Fender HR deluxe- sounded like crap & didn't take pedals well @ all compared to any Marshall...

it was ok on cleans w/ the tele for stuff like "smokey & the bandit theme"
but other than that..................

Just an opinion but: First forget your pedals. Find an amp that has the sound you love with the amount of gain you will use the most. If you need more sounds start to worry about how channel switching and pedals can help you achieve that.

Look into the DSLs they are very great and flexible, which is something you might appreciate. I just saw some videos of the "mini" EVH 5150. That seems like a very nice amp, a bit too harsh for my taste but it's just youtube vids so worth a look.

Re: best fender tube amp/ other tube amps under $1000?

I like the Super Reverb for a good all purpose Fender amp. It has some headroom but you can still get some breakup at a reasonable level. For $1000 you could get an early 70's Silverface. With a pedal you could get some heavy tones with it. I like the 4x10 speaker config of the Super too. They have a nice tight and punchy bottom end

I am pretty sure all of those guys used Marshall amps.... Not sure what Cobain used though...... To get those tones I would say get a JMP or a JCM 2204/2203. They all used pedals though. Frusciante is just a Strat through a cleanish cranked Marshall.

no no no...the DLS/TSL's dont suck at all. they may be a bit more "polished" sounding than a vintage jmp or jcm, but they will be MILES more versatile, and and they are still among the most popular amplifiers on the planet for pro and non pro players alike.

the old ones, while there are many out there that have "it"....some of them do not have it, and they can be harsh, and difficult to control as they dont really start to have "it" until they are up stupidly loud.... and, as wonderful and classic as they are, are a one trick pony...for the most part. its a great trick, but again, they dont have the magic until they are just plain stupid loud.

i mean, if you can scoop a jcm or jmp 2x12 combo for under a grand, grab it. but the DSL's TSL's are a great sounding amp. clean to classic to metal.

do yourself a favor and go play a couple b4 crossing them off your list. the best bang for the buck imo. plus youve got all the modern conveniences that come with them, fx loops, spring reverb, channel switching for lead boosts or whatever you need, independent eq's for each channel....but they are cheap b/c there are just so many of them out there.

some vintage glass and nice speakers, the DSL's TSL's can kick some ass.

btw, cobain played a mesa studio 22 caliber. and the chili pepper dude is a fender player all the way, clean and overcompressed....no marshalls...

the 1st 1/2 of that statement screamed the supersonic combo w/ the bandmaster cab w/ a couple of greenback 25 celestions or the stock fender eminence(depends on how clean you want it or early breakup).
if there is a pedal involved & yer playing a strat & Blues it's a 808 or 2 w/ different settings-ala Stevie or Ian.

actually john fruscainte used all marshalls, live at slane castle he uses 2 marshall jubilees and a marshall plexi, i think is was a 59' slp. I LOVE MARSHALLS but i dont want a stack right now just cause i wont use the volume it has and if i get a lowwer volume amp i can make it louder and it'll sound better

The difference in volume between a 40w amp and a 100w amp is about 3 1/2 - 4 db's ... meaning, you'll hardly notice a difference in actual volume. The difference you'll notice gets back to what you were asking with respect to clean headroom ... the lower wattage amps will just break up faster than the higher wattage amps.

Late '70's Musicman HD for loud and clean or late 60's/early 70's Traynor YBA-1 for crunch. With your budget you can probably get both and have a few bones left over for a tubescreamer.

I just got this silverface bassman (soon to be tweeded) for 350
Gotta shop around.I'd rather have one of these any day than any current production fender amp ,especially hot rods

cobain only used marshall cabs with a mesa boogie preamp. and the only marshalls ive looked into are plexi style (jtm 45, 1959 slp <3, 1987x) jubilees of coarse, the dsl series, and the MA series. but they are all out of my price range except the DSL's and the ma series, but the ma series doesnt sound like the others and DSL's are good so im thinking about it. but i want something versatile. can blackstar and egnater match marshall tones, cuz i heard they could.

Is the Haze 40 combo still around? I tried that and it had a very nice classic Marshall tone and was $700.

I bought a 2010 Haze 40 a month ago s/h for 200 quid...it's great, I know there have been reliability issues in the past, but so far, mine's been fine. I fitted a V30 in it and it sounds much better than the stock "Marquee" Celestion. Great vintage Marshall tone and sounds great with a good o/d in front of it.
