Fender Super Twin - any good?

There's an old guy around here trying to sell me a Fender Super Twin. It's noisy, but it just sounds like dirty pots. What I'm worried about is the SIX 6L6GC's and the Compactron in the preamp. That could be a very pricey amp to re-tube. I didn't play through it yet, he was putting the hard sell on me and I was trying to bow out gracefully until I could get some info on the thing. Plus the dude said two of the power tubes were bad so he put some new ones in there. I'm sure he just put them in and didn't bias the amp or care if they matched or not.

That is what Nugent used in the 70s. I have heard they are ridiculously loud, I want to say 185 watts. You can imagine how loud it would be before it started breaking up

That's what I was thinking, too. I know how hard it is to get a SF Twin to break up (actually it's impossible IMO). I think if I get another Fender amp, it'll be a Vibroverb RI or maybe a Super.

If you want something that big, I would get a Peavey Festival. This used the power stage of a MACE with an all tube preamp.

Big amps are sort of fading away. With today's PA systems you can get by with just about anything. I saw a band that used three DSL401's sitting on a slant stand. No need for 100 watt stacks.

I didn't think you were looking for an amp as big as the Super Twin.

Wilder modded JCM 2204 (Sold my JMP to Joe.). Many other amps. Strats and Explorer are my main guitars.

Re: Fender Super Twin - any good?

Even a regular Twin has too much headroom for my taste.

No, I wasn't even looking for an amp at all. The guy has a booth in an indoor flea market and he always has cool stuff. I bought my (now ex) Hot Rod DeVille from him. He's had this Super Twin forever. At first it was $550 and of course he had a lot of people considering it and I should snag it before somebody else did. Now he's begging people to buy it at $350. I might be able to walk out with it for under $300. I might even have six 6L6GC's for it. It also needs a 6C10 Compactron.
