Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Well I might get banned after this post, but gotta agree with Zoom between Splawn's, VHT's and Marshall when it comes to cabs. Small recap, 2 years ago I got my first VHT cab and it sounded so damn good. I mean full, tight, low end for days... it sounded so good that I sold my 1960A and Mesa that same week and ordered in another VHT. And never looked back.

I sold my angled front VHT to get another staright front about 2 months ago. So i decided to go with a Splawn this time. I special ordered in a Splawn 4x12 and that same week got a great deal on a new 1960B still in box for $600 and shes all i've been jammin with since I got it. I even did the Bob Molton thing to it. Well this week end the Splawn arrived and we decided to A/B all 3 cabs. Like i said above i've been jammin only on the Marshall these past few months so I got use to hearing the Marshall again. So when we started this A/B thing we kicked off with the 1960B. Sounded good, moved on to the VHT... "BANG" it killed the Marshall. It was like I had 2 4x12's hooked up. My buddy was shocked.... we connected the Splawn same thing, killed the Marshall. So cab wise, the Marshall was inferior to the Splawn and VHT. We did these test's with a 5150, 5150 II, VHT amps & ADA preamps...

I know tone is subjective, but I sure aint a noob thats talking out of his ass. You can see the gear I had/have so I have a pretty good idea of what sounds good and what sounds bad. And sadly, the 1960 wasnt up to it. I would love to hear a 70's or early 80's Marshall since i hear these are the ones to get...

So yeah, I just sold the Marshall today.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Why would you get banned? That'd be harsh.

I'd love to have access to all these different cabs like you do. I think the next time I go to the city I'll look into the different cabs. I don't think we'd have a Splawn but a VHT they might.

So yeah, thanks for the report.

The question is though how much do the VHT and Splawn cabs that you tried out or have cost new?

What type of speakers are in them?

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Not very expensive dude...

The great thing about Splawn is that you get to custom finish your cab & what i mean by that is your choice of: Tolex color, pipping color, grillcloth color, special tolex patterns (slight extra in cost), straight/angled front or hybryd front & skeaker choices (made by Eminence for Splawn). All this for $750 U.S. + shipping. In Montreal a brand new 1960A/B purchased in a store will run you 1020.00 (more or less) the Splawn landed at my doorstep under $1065 canadian. I picked out an "X" pattern of smallblock and bigblock speakers. You call them, talk to Scott (the owner) or someone else in his crew and let them know what you need and they will give you suggestions. and Hand made in the USA.

VHT's choice isnt as huge as Splawn's and you can't custom the cabs either... but you get 2 choices of cabs, The Deliverance or the FatBottom (i own the FB). Eminence speakers (P50E's) made only for VHT. Straight or angled front & closed back. Also hand made in the USA. Mine cost me $1200 canadian and I picked it up a few hours away to save $150 of shipping.

So for the difference in quality that extra money is worth every damn penny in my book.

And btw, I dont have access to these cabs around me to try out first.... If i want a new VHT amp or cab, i need to make an 8 hour drive (total). And Splawns I contact them directly and order... I only went from word of mouth and clips i've heard for this one. But it was worth
every penny.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Thanks for the info!

The other option is changing the speakers out in the cabs as well but for the moment I'm pretty happy with the sound I'm getting from the cabs & amps I have.

I will see if they have a VHT in town I can check out though and my drive is roughly the same round trip as well, and longer during the winter which is about to be upon us.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Presently have a white JCM800 4104 (how I found this site), a 73' 100w superlead with a slant cab (g12H30 reissue)& old plexi botom cab (v30's). 64' red panel Vox AC30, 65 Fender Showman head, 64' blonde Fender Bassman piggyback (celestion 15watt alnico's), Peavey vintage club 20.
My first real amp was a 65 Twin (bought it new in 65), have had Vox ac50 with 4x12 bottom, two Hi-Watt DR 100's with HiWatt bottom (Fane speakers), 65 Fender Deluxe, 65' Princeton, small Rickenbacker combo, another early Fender Bassman 76 JMP 50w, and probably some I have forgotten about. Oh, I sold my 59 LP Flametop in 1970 for five hundred bucks!!

Oops, 50W Sound City, also sold.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

for what it worth , i had a chance to listen to a soldano head on a couple different
cabs , and the soldano cab sounded ok , but then they put it into a orange cab ,
WOW !!! it made a huge difference in tone and volume. imo
never got to hear it in a marshall.
this was all 4x12 cabs also.

Regret selling my Carlsbro 50 Top.
A wonderfully simple EL34 powered tone machine. Gorgeous break-up and with a boost/OD pedal sweet classic rock lead tones.
The one amp I'd get back now if i could afford it and/or find a good un.

Put the bunting up and start the party. Looks like I'm getting my Carlsbro 50 Top back.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

I'd love to have a big f*ckin room with like all the flagships of the most popular amp brands. Like... JCM800/DSL/TSL/Plexi/JVM/JCM900/VM from Marshall, Pro-Tube/HotRod etc. from Fender, Rectifier's/Stiletto's from Mesa... The list goes on and on.

Then I could compare them all and bloody sell them all, except the Marshalls!

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

I would love to have my old 2204s back. I had a 1984 2204 that was rumoured to have been owned by Bob Rock. It was my tone machine. I could throw any pedal at it and it would sing and dance at my bidding. It was "Stolen" when it was on loan to a guy I trusted...

The other was a 1978 JMP 2204 that I didn't appreciate enough and should have ponied up for a re-tube with the same tubes I had in the one above rather than trade it for a JCM800 2203. I was using the two in stereo and wanted them to look the same. Lame I know...

I tried a JCM900 reissue the other day. It was the first time I ever tried one. I wish I had way back when I snubbed my nose at them for not being JCM800s... I was impressed with the tone and usable gain right from the head. To my ear it was better than the SLX the store had at the time and right up there with the JVM but without the complicated interface. So the 4100 will go on my list of amps to gather.

I suppose another I should put on the list would be a 1957 Fender Harvard. That would make my Randy Rhoads amp collection complete.

And last but not least, I would like to get my hands on a Peavey Ultra Plus. Always liked it, never wanted to shell out for it back then, can't really justify it now.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Hey guys:

I'm currently playing a JCM200 TSL 100 half-stack. Prior to that (pre-2006), I was playing almost exclusively small bars/clubs where I just didn't need that much oopmh. Based on the reaction I got at Guitar Center when I traded up for the TSL, I should be ashamed to say that prior to 2006 I was playing through a Fender CyberTwin. These guys looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears (line stolen from "A Christmas Story"). Honestly, I really enjoyed that amp, and would love to still have it around. Sure, it was a tweak-fest dialing in the right tone, but once you were there, the damn thing sounded great. It was portable, easy to lug around, and loud enough for all the indoor gigs we played. We have some live recordings of our band where I'm playing the CyberTwin, and they rock! Anyone else out there own a CyberTwin, or am I the only LOSER to have played one of these things? Still can't understand all the bad press those amps got...

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

I have a Marshall JCM 800 4210, and a Peavey Rage 258 that I just bought and that I'll be returning sometime next week. I have had a Marshall MG15CD.

As for amps that I want, I would definitely like a JCM 800 head. Preferably the 2203, but a 1959/1987 wouldn't hurt either. Alternatively, I'd like a 2205. I would also like an Orange Tiny Terror as I hear they sound great. I also would like a Peavey 6505/6505+. Chances are the next head I'll buy will either be a 6505 or a 2203.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

My amp thats in the shop right now due to a blown OP Trany having the Tech put in a Mercmag should improve the sound the cab is a 1960a Vintage with V30s on them

since my main amp still in the shop I got this today and it sounds excellent sweet little amp I was eyeing an Marshall artist but this probably way better.

also have a MG15CD and MG15FXD and a Fender Bass amp.

Trying to save up for a VM may be next birthday.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

i would really like my original 69 50W plexi back, or even the 100W plexi bass head probably a 68, I traded that for a 64 Vox Ac 30 TB, needless to say I do have any of them now, what i do have is a 65 Amps London 18W head (I use the EF86 Vox channel) and an Egnater 20W rebel, i run them both at the same time and it sounds great. Really if you want the great sounds of Keith Richards and many other greats, it comes with one clean amp and one distorted running at the same time. I also own a 74 princeton and a 73 champ, both are great for recording, also a blues junior, oh and a ceriatone TW clone, kind of like a suped up ac 30. I also had a DSL50, sold that recently, it was the best of the newer marshall amps I have had. I have tried the new Vintage Modern, it is good, never gigged with it though so I cannot really say. I had a Mesa Boogie Triaxis with a 50:50 Power amp, that was my last live rig before i moved to the States from the UK. Another was a Mesa Boogie Tremoverb, really good amp but frighteningly loud. I had a pair of Boogie Studio 22 preamps too, great for recording, really sweet sound. Also a Hardwood Mesa Boogie MKII with basket weave grill, real clean sound. As you can tell I went through a Boogie period. I am not keen on the newer boogie amps at all, have tried most of them, they are well made but just not to my taste. Had a fender Twin several times, also a Park 50W combo, used that in stereo with a Twin (the Park is a Marshall with a different name on it). I am sure there are many i have forgotten about. Oh yeah there was the HH 100 head (UK punters will know the brand), solid state, had been dropped so the first channel distorted kind of tube like, I used that for a while, borrowed from a friend.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

My first amp I still own a 1971 Marshall Major *1978 Bass Model* it is in the shop getting full service. My practice amp I have is a Line6 Spider 3 30 watt amp! I am thinking of trading off the Major for either a JCM800, JCM900 100 watt head or a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 100 watt head *I was blown away by this amp when I played through one last night*

marantz1300, I notice the WEM copycat, have not seen one of them in years, do you use it live, how is it holding up. I briefly used one in the 70's but found it too unreliable to gig with. I now have a TTE a DL4 and a carbon copy.

Epiphone Valve Jr. (soon to be modified) 2x12 cab

One of those Dumble clones by ceriatone.
An early 50's DArmond 1x12 combo

I dont gig. I'm fifty years old and have only been playing for five years. I picked up all my gear used. The copycat sounds brilliant, but it is noisy. You dont notice while playing though. It is bulky also. I also have a Melos tape echo and a few delay pedals. My favorite is an old plastic Ario SAD 1(Stereo Analogue Delay). The WEM sounds better ,its just not as convenient. The top effect on the Boogies is also a delay. An Ibanez DM100.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

UPDATE!

I've had the old Marshall MG15CD, an '87 Marshall JCM 800 4210 and a Peavey Rage 258. I currently have an Ibanez TBX15R, which I'm going to sell in favor of a new Marshall MG, as the Ibanez is a bit too cold for me. I would definitely like a DSL 100, a VM 2266 and possibly a Peavey 6505.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

601 Blues "Fender Champ 600 I had heard a loota hype about this little guy, got one not a fan of em, I use it for a door stop!!HAHA"

Wow!

You just brought back something I have not thought about in years and years when I read your comment about Fender Champs.

For a while I used to have the smallest Champ Fender made (with whatever tiny 6 or 8 inch speaker they had in them back in the early 70s) which I would plug my guitar into and then (I forgot how I did it) I would plug the Champ directly into a 100 watt Marshall Plexi stack with 25 watt Greenbacks.

The result was that the Marshall acted as a big muscle for the Champ which produced this huge great tone when combined.

I do not how I thought to do it or why I stopped using it...

Maybe I should get another one of the smallest Fender Champ's available and see if it sounds as good as I remember – or like a very loud doorstop!

In terms of "wishes" – I wish I had every f'g thing I once owned so I could have a retirement nestegg – haha.

I honestly cannot remember all of the Marshalls, Hiwatts, Mesa Boogies, Ampegs, Fenders, Les Pauls, Strats, SGs, Teles, Travis Beans, effects, effects, and even more effects, I have owned over the past 45 years... My own private music store – more like my own private Hell of regret letting some real sweet ones slip by because I had to eat and pay the rent by having periodic "fire sales."

Currently, I have a very basic set-up: An amp, two guitars, and some effects (see photo). I am at that stage of life where Les (Paul) is more...

However, in answering the question, I would really like a Bluesbreaker with 2x12's and then do some heavy mods to it (e.g., Mercury Magnet transformers, JJ Tubes, etc.)

It is the one amp I have never had but wanted to own one day even if it sucks - at least I will have had one... Because I am married that rules out a number of things on my wish list as well.

Also, I would like a Jaguar XKE and a... oops! That is for a different forum...

If you want to check-out in detail my current rig, just travel over to my MySpace...

Fun question.
