Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

I REALLY miss my first stack! It was a Super Lead 100W, the 4x12 cabs belonged to "Blue Cheer" and were loaded with "Altec Lansing" speakers. I don't remember the model of the speakers but I can remember that the head was $75.00 and each cab was $125.00. Let me tell you, that puppy was LOUD!!!!! The tone wasn't too bad either. I lost it piece by piece, 1 cab and the head were stolen and I traded the last cab for an "Orange" stack, the only brand new amp I've ever owned. "Orange" was cool but it just wasn't "Marshall".

Well I've got a Marshall JVM 410H, Peavey 6505+, and a Fender HR Deville 212. Maybe a Mesa Triple Rectifier? Or a JCM 800 2205KK?

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Well, I had a '78 2104 for years. 1980 to 1994 to be precise, and I wish I still had it.

These days I have:

'81 Fender Twin Reverb. Recently re-furbished with NOS pre-amp tubes, JJ power tubes, Celestion V30 speakers, and a mod to the normal channel that uses the "Bright" switch as a partial lift of the tone stack which gives you about an extra 10 dB of pre-amp gain. The problem with this amp is that it's too bloody loud. Even at an open-air gig I played last month it was only on 2 and a bit out of 12.

'74 Fender Princeton Reverb. Weber Signature C10 speaker. Still has the original tubes in it! I found this being used as a piano stool in a back-street music store in Hong Kong!

Trace Elliot Tramp. A 30 watt solid-state amp. I had to replace the power amp ICs a couple of years ago. They wear out just like valves do and in addition have a limited shelf life. One day they went "pop" like 8 legged fuses!

Trace Elliot Velocette. 18 watt 1x10 combo. NOS Ei power tubes.

Fender Pro Jr. Ditto.

Laney VC30 112. My gigging amp before the Twin Reverb's resurrection Voxy clean channel and Marshall-like crunch.

Tech21 Trademark 10. Possibly the best practice amp ever? I also use it on low volume duo gigs and as a back-up amp DI'd to the PA with it pointing at me as an on-stage monitor.

Roland Micro Cube. A great travel toy. I even gigged with it once, backing up an acoustic guitar/voc.

Vox Brian May "Deacy". The little 1x8" version. I ought to try it as a treble booster into the Laney sometime...

I also use a Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602 in our rehearsal space. That's an amp with "issues". It suffers from volume fade-out and has blown up twice in the last year, once cooking the output transformer. The guy from Junction amps recently did his best with it, but the main board on those things is not meant to be serviced and once he had to start swapping components the tracks started to lift. He managed to get it working again and located one broken track that he thought might have been causing it's volume issues, but no such luck. I still end up with it running gain on 8 and master on 8 just to be heard at practice! Suffice it to say that if I ever buy another Marshall then it'll be an old one...

Hey, man, if you ever get to Boston you can test drive my 64 Princeton. I think I could trust you with it (and a LP Deluxe or whatever). Seriously, look me up if you visit Boston. Oh, and the fender reissue amps are pretty damn fine for the money...

I recently tried a Vintage Modern with a Gibson 1959 Reissue Les Paul at Matt's Music in Weymouth, MA. The amp is very nice, but for the money if you really shop around you can get an early 70's Marshall 50-100 watter, which has BETTER tone! I will say that of all the newer Marshall's I've tried the Vintage Modern is the best.

Depends how deep your pockets are. The Marshall 15cdr is nice, very nice for solid state - really good tone. I also like Fender Frontman 15R (with reverb), a great lil amp for the money.

Have you tried out Splawn? If not, you would do yourself a huge injustice by not trying it. The VM is nice stuff, but when you turn a Splawn up, it eats the VM for lunch.

This is the other amp forum. I hate to say it, but it's true. The only good Marshall amps are the older ones. The new ones they have been making are not half as good as the old stuff. The Splawn has the Marshall type voicing. It's basically a modded Marshall. That's how Scott got his start, by modding Marshalls. If the VM was better, I would have bought the VM. But it didn't sound better to me.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Not that this is the only reason to refute your statement about how Splawns are so much better than Marshall's, but that must explain why so many top acts are using Splawns right?

I appreciate your -opinion- on what -you- like but to cast your opinion as if it were 'gospel truth' is where you lost me.

Just like Soldano's might be a modded brand at it's root and a Boogie is a modded Fender at it's root, it doesn't make them better than anything else.

Might make them better for a player who likes that tone but not better than another.

Tone is highly subjective as is guitars, pickups, strings, picks, effects etc.

I think the old Marshall's are great but then so are the newer one's, after all they're based in large part on their predecessor's which was the goal of the Marshall Co.

So, I have to respectfully agree to disagree with your opinion which seemed more a like a statement to me.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Well I agree with you. We have our tastes and that is why there are many different types of amps. I am sorry if I came off as an ass. I just really like the Splawn over the VM. The VM is a nice amp, but I didn't like it as much as the Splawn. Bottom line, buy what makes you happy. I went from a Dual Rec to a Splawn. The Dual sounded good for what it does, but it came down to what I really wanted out of an amp and the Splawn did it for me. Now a JCM800 from the 80's, that is pure love! Those are killer. The 800's sound a LOT different than the VM. So does a Plexi and so does the Marshall Major.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

What I have now...
For guitar:
1984 JCM800 4010 1x12 combo, vertical inputs, with a V30
1984 Marshall 5210 1x12 combo with a G12M-70
1960A with 2 V30's & 2 G12H's
Kustom '36 Coupe
Peavey Studio Pro 112 with a G12T-75

For bass:
Behringer Ultrabass BX4500H head
Shred Muzic B410 bass cab loaded with Celestions

What I want next...
To tear the solidstate guts out of my 5210 and build a JTM45 clone amp in it's chassis!

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Okay today I've narrowed it down to three aside from the ones I have already:

* The Mesa Dual Rectifier -- it's a classic.
* Soldano SLO 100 -- because it's the shit.
* Orange Thunderverb 50 -- just because i play in Drop Bb at times.

Cabs? I someday want to replace two of my speakers with the Electro Voice EVM 12L Zakk Wyldes that unfortunately are no longer made.... because i play in Drob Bb at times.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

The EV's are bad speakers! I had a pair of 2x12's with EV's in them and they ripped! They are really different sounding than what I have today. I guess I did a 180. I went from super high wattage, to 25 watts. But of course I had a full out assault metal rig. I had the typical 80's rocker rig. I had the ADA MP1 and ADA T100S amp. That thing did the brootalz! But now since I am older, I prefer the warmer Greenback tone. I like the speaker breakup of the Greenbacks. The EV's could not be broken. You could pummel them into submission and they would never surrender.

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

Hi Buds,
I thought I'd mention the stuff I own that gets used, there's a difference. First, I'm still waiting on my store's 2266c that's been on order--and paid for--for a month. But I use:
Marshall 205c, I like the range but mostly the clean.
Fender Super Reverb, the tens bring out the best in my 335
Musicman HD2x12 130, it's a twin and a half
Hartke and Peavey for my keyboards in stereo, I use bass amps because the lows will blow guitar speakers coming from the two synths I run using Y cords.
Two pingnose, a 40 and a 60, mostly for their heads, but the 40 sounds good alone.
GK Micro Bass with ext cab, it's right for my studio space, sounds fantastic, I'm using a Gibson reissue SG bass, I took back an ash Jazz bass, the Gibson just fits me better.
As mentioned, I'm waiting on the 2266c to run along side the 205c in stereo with a Digitech processor, at times it's easier than running my two wha pedals, fuzz face, univibe-a real one-octavia--an old one--Boss delay and chorus pedals, there's more but I'm getting tired of writing, there'a a Vox in there too. I've been looking at a 65 bassman head to fit an Avatar 2x12 cab that I put two V30s in over the summer. I think that's most of it, the list of what I've traded is as long. Next time I'll do the guitars. Mike Sicowitz, Great Forum and Members.

Let me rephrase it then. My post was misleading. My EV's were bad (badass) and they ripped (they tore everything up, they themselves did not rip). They were beasts. They tore up small countries. Sorry for my misleading posts.

Hails everyone!!!!!! @ the moment I own a Marshall JCM2000 TSL (w/ way too many Marshall cabs), a Matamp/ Gibson(mid 90's) Orange OR80, a 1975 Orange OR120, a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec., Peavey EVH 5150 (block letter), Fender Roc Pro 1000(most underrated amp i've ever heard!) and a late 60's Vox Royal Guardsman........but I want a freakin MATAMP GT Retro or Series 2000...also want to play a Wizard Vintage Classic (everything i've read about these amps says they're the greatest thing since sliced bread)

Re: What amp do you have had , have or want ?

I had a Marshall MG15CD. I don't own an amp at the moment, but I'd love to have a DSL 100 and a 2203 with appropriate Marshall cabs. Sometime in February, when the new house has been built, and finished, and we've moved in, I'm going to buy a practise amp, and I would really like a Marshall combo. If I'd have to pick something other than a Marshall amp, I'd probably go with a Hughes & Kettner amp - something like a Switchblade.
