Your favorite High gain amps under $1000(used value counts)

What are your favorite non marshall amps you can get cheap on the used market? Amps that have great tone at reasonable prices? Here are mine in order:

1- Peavey XXX. Hands down, my favorite non german amp. They sounds freaking amazing and can be had for under $500. I would pay more than that for the tone they put out.

2-Ampeg VL-1002. US metal heads around the bay area affectionately call this one the SLAMpeg because of the sheer amount of saturation it produces. It is an all tube high gain head. A guy in a local band used o use one before he got some funny Ibanez tube amp. sounded mean.

3-Peavey 5150II/6505+. this is pretty self explanatory. Cheap, Great sound, just a little generic. they are one trick ponies.

Your turn!

B52 AT100 You can find them cheap all day and they sound identical to a Triple Rectumfryer.

Yep. The think is dead mint. No word on the sound because the night I saw it it sounded like shit, and he said it was because of the cab, but he tells me it sounds amazing, and I am prone to believe him. It looks monstrous with those 6550's.

I gotta say non-marshall, under a grand, not giving many options...

Laney AOR, Peavey Ultra... IDK... I've not really thought about non Marshalls... might be able to find a single rec for around $800... seen them that low before.

for high gain, what about a rack setup, ADA MP1 and a decent tube power amp, should be able to get something decent for under $1,000

Pretty much every Peavey under the sun. I can't think of one I've played and been like, "damn that sucks..." Even the SS Peavey Supreme sounded awesome when I played it, so I gotta say that Peavey just makes good affordable stuff in general.

Randalls RM100 line is THE best amp for the money though right now. For whatever reason, they retailed for like $1,800 loaded with three modules and you can get them for $700-$1000 loaded with modules easily now. There are so many modules available, and you can mod them all, PLUS, they are MIDI capable and just sound monstruous.

You'll like this one; four classic Marshalls in one module

You guys like the XXX? Jesus Christ that is hands down one of the worst amps I've ever played. For real, they're pure garbage, it's impossible to dial in a decent tone on those things? We had a guitar player in one of our bands had one and we pretty much had to give him an ultimatum to get a different piece of gear it was so bad. That goes for the JSX amps too. Terrible, terrible sounds... Ugh Too piercing, too brittle, too fuzzy and you can't dial any of it out. I guess it could be a good amp if you put a distortion pedal on the clean channel. That's the only way it will work. Hell, even Satriani used Laney's backstage the whole time he was endorsed on the JSX.

The 5150's are good.

Mesa DC 5 1x12 combo. Great amp with a Paul or Strat. Way better than a Dual Rec. Has that Soundgarden tone on it's own and pushed it's a monster. ~$650 used.

6505+ and 5150 are ok, XXX didn't do it for me, but I'd only played one once about a year ago.

I forgot about the JSX when I lumped all Peaveys into my discussion....I meant to say, "All Peaveys EXCEPT the JSX." haha I tried one and didn't like it either. They do have an overly buzzy quality about them.

I also forgot about Bugeras...Say what you will, but the 6260/6262/333XL s are the best sounding amps in that price range for metal. My best friend uses a 333XL and we can dial in some vicious tones with it.

I am still sticking with the Randall RM100 as THE amp though; I really wish some more guys on here would try one just so I don't sound crazy!

this guy plays metal core, but flip to 3:38(5:33 for more playing than talk), and tell me that doesn't sound fantastic!

The video isn't too bad but the microphone sounds like it's buffering itself from being overloaded. That's definitely not what they sound like in person.

The one I played (it was a 2x12 combo version) did sound exactly like that. Possibly the one you heard had bad tubes/something wrong with it? Not sure what it could have been man, but they've always been fantastic in my experience as well.

The one I played was a 2x12 combo also and sounded amazing. And my friend has the 120 watt head with a Vader Cab That I have had the pleasure of beeing a few feet away from when the thing was on 4 at shows a number of times, and it sounds freaking great. even better.

And here is a show I was actually at. Band Dysentery using a XXX Vader 4x12. Every time he hits the switch and one amp only is on, It's the triple X and vader.Like for example, 1:43(an many other times). and this camera has an amazing external Mic. and this isn't even the best tone I have heard out of a triple x. This is Slam btw, so be warned

I don't care for the XXX either. The Bugera 6260 that I heard lacked definition... though that could be the EQ. Gotta agree with the JSX descriptions too.

Can't believe no one's mentioned the Blue DooDoo...

Re: Your favorite High gain amps under $1000(used value counts)

the XXX can be a great amp...OR a shit amp. It's all in the EQ man. you have those mids lower than 3 oclock on the crunch and leads and you're asking for thin fiz. and we know people do that so that's probably part of it.

to me, once dialed in it sounded like a Marshall on metal. if dialed in wrong it sounded like a broken transistor radio.

Peavey 5150
ENGL Fireball 60 (Average used price is less than $800)
VHT Deliverance 60 (easy to score for less than $900)
Marshall JCM900 SL-X

The Peavey XXX is ok and it does sound decent with KT77 power tubes. I cannot stand an amp without a presence knob though. I grew tired of mine pretty quickly...

I have to agree with you on the Bugera, specifically the 333XL.

I mainly play my 5150III and own a '79 2204 but I recently picked up a Bugera 333XL for $400 off of CL. It was just a couple of months old too.

I bought it without ever having heard one simply as an inexpensive backup. I was shocked at how good this thing actually sounds.
I have heard about issues with the Bugera line and stuff but I took a chance and so far so good.

Epiphone So-Cal 50h and Valve Jr. Head are unquestionably the best deals ever on tube heads. GC in Indy has a Valve Jr. Head for $84 now..

Re: Your favorite High gain amps under $1000(used value counts)

i got a peavey rockmaster preamp and peavy power amp (one channel, 4 6l6s... not sure which one) and you can dial in pretty much any tone you want from rock to metal
add a 2-button marshall footswitch with a trs plug and you can go from clean/dirty and gain/ultra
i think i spent less than 500$ between the two of them on fleabay

I've had a few I've liked a lot. My faves:

1. Peavey VTM 60 or 120. (these suckers are downright nasty!)

2. Sovtek mig's (maybe not high gain, but are great with the right pedal in front)

This i can't answer, if i had a $1000 i'd still be looking for the best used Marshall i could find.

But, i'd also consider a cheap 5150, 6505, or Rectifier kind of metalhead amp if the price were too good to pass up.

If one spent 1000$ you could easily find a JCM 900 or DSl or tsl head at the least...
