vox ac 30

Hi guys and girls,
I'm looking at scoring an ac 30 and need to know how much better they sound with bulldogs. It's a fair amount of money so if I don't need to waste it on the better speakers-I can spend it on a better new strat. Here's the thing my freinds, I know the bulldogs are better, but are they a lot better. I plan on using one along with one of my Marshall combos when playing in stereo to get a more distinct sound in one of the channels. Using two Marshalls sounds great but I would like to use a Marshall as the main amp but need something that sounds quality wise like a Marshall but with a different tone so my stereo setup features the Marshall without a dropoff when my delay hits the other amp. I hope I made sense to someone out there in Marshall land. Have a good one my buds. Mike Sicowitz, Love the forum and smart members.

Re: vox ac 30

I like the blues in my AC30. Sounds better than most when it comes to the dreaded 'killer cone' syndrome.

If you really want an AC-30 ( I have one too.) Bulldogs are the only way to go.....IMHO.

+1.
I have a CC2X and recently sold a CC2. Huge difference. The CC2 sounds good, the CC2x sounds AC30.

Re: vox ac 30

Yeah, a Vox with Greenbacks or Greenback clones (the Wharfedales) is definitely nothing to snicker at, but an AC30 with Celestion Blues is heavenly. The ideal scenario when talking about an AC30CC series is to buy the CC2 and put in the Blues yourself. The Blues you get from Celestion have UK cones in them, the ones in the CX2X are Vox-branded and actually have different, Chinese cones in them. Word on the internet is the Chinese-made cones get a little fizzy at moderate volume; whereas, the UK-made ones do not.

I have an AC30CC2 upgraded with UK Celestion Blues, an Accutronics reverb tank (the stock 'verb is awful), and NOS glass. It's probably one of the nicest if not the nicest amp I've ever owned.

If you wanna get extra tasty, hit the front end of the normal channel with a treble booster, Brian May style. Total Queen tones. I have a BBE treble booster for sale if you're interested. $50 shipped.

Wow! This is an old thread that got resurrected!

I agree with Frankie - The Vox AC30CC2 is probably one of the best amps I've ever owned. I still have the stock Wharfedales in there and although at first they were horrendous, when they break in, they sound great.

I've never tried the Blues but right now, I don't have $600 to blow on speakers. Maybe one day.

I don't mind the stock reverb. I don't understand why some people think they're so bad. I don't use much reverb anyways. Does anyone have A/B clips of the stock reverb vs the upgraded one?

UK vs Chinese Blue

Big difference but judging from those you tube clips, I prefer the Chinese version. The UKs sound muffled.

This is a much better clip:

Much prefer the UK Blues in this clip. Just goes to show how deceiving YouTube clips can be.

The Wharfedales are fantastic speakers in disguise actually. I took out the two G12T-75's out of my 1936 cab, and threw the Wharfedales in there. Without anybody looking, they just assume it's a pair of G12H's. Very similar speakers.

The stock reverb had dwell for like 40 years on it, which is totally unusable. The Accutronics tank, for a whopping $30 shipped, made a huge difference. The dwell has to be like 1/4 the time now.

And yes, YouTube clips can be deceiving. Also, most people just throw the Blues in and wait for tonal nirvana to occur. While all Celestions take an serious amount of time to break in, it seems like the Blues take the longest. I'd say I put 40 hours of play time on mine before they settled in and really hit the sweet spot, and that's playing at moderate volumes. Out of the box they are indeed muffled and quite icepicky.
