Tempo Amp Made in Japan......Anyone have any info on this one??

Hi all,

My brother found this amp at his town's recycle center and gave it to me to see If I could check it out .

When I got it, some of the pots were loose and were able to spin around completely (the volume pot mainly) and hence the leads to it were broken off.

I tightened all of the pots and reconnected the leads to the volume pot, replaced the power cord with a 3 prong cord and the old gal fired right up and doesn't sound too bad (it's no 2204 but still kinda cool as is......sounds decent with my old TS-9 in front of it.........sorry no Slash tone here.......).

It has 1-12AX7 preamp tube, 1-6AV6 power tube and 1-6AQ5 Tremolo Tube. I'm still trying to get the tremolo to work....no luck yet. Very strange how the tremolo foot switch jack is wired with only leads connected to one side of the jack (see pic).

Has anyone seen one of these before or have any info on it? I couldn't find a model # or anything or much info searching thru google.

I would say made in the 70's. You asked about the "TEN" tube? It is probably Japanese as everything in this is made in Japan including the speaker.

An interesting bit of amplifier history.

Little single ended amp. How does she sound cranked? Is the speaker still good?

Re: Tempo Amp Made in Japan......Anyone have any info on this one??

I love all the odd ball Japanese gear. I had a Tempo drum kit years ago; same logo and everything. My dad, who also played, bought it back in 1966 or '67, if I remember correctly. I used that kit well into the late '70's until we had a basement flood which ruined the kick drum. After that, I integrated the toms into my Slingerland kit I replaced it with and played them for years after that. In fact, my brother, who has what has to be one of the best vintage Slingerland collections on the east coast, still has a couple of the drums from that old kit. I have to tell you, the black pearl covers never yellowed, they still sound great, stayed fairly well in-round and are actually made from maple and mahogany.

Tempo actually made pretty good "budget line" stuff and had a very broad product line, which included guitars and amps as well. There's a vintage guitar web-site somebody has up that includes a few Tempo guitars; mostly similar to the weird Strat knock offs that were popular then. If I can find the link I'll post it. I forget the name of the Japanese company just now, but the manufacturer eventually became the supplier of the very early Univox stuff, probably just a couple of years after that amp was likely made. I'm going to disagree with Marty on the 70's call, but not by much, and put that one at the mid-60's. That's a pretty neat find.

P.S. Found it! It's http://www.myrareguitars.com/. You have to go into the Vintage Guitars section and sniff around in the 60's stuff. He trades/sells them fairly regularly, so they rotate, but he's currently got a Tempo bass guitar in there right now.

I should have said early 70's. I'm going by the fact that the Japanese became the primary source for audio tubes in the 70's and as such, made a lot of tube gear like this guitar amp. Tubes were still big in a lot of knock offs in through the 80's.

I bet the Japanese wish they still made tubes. That would be great.

You misunderstood; there's nothing about the Tempo amps at all on that site, he's just a guitar guy. He's had a number of different Tempo guitars on the site over time and currently has a Tempo bass he's showing. I was just trying to demonstrate how broad Tempo's product line was in the '60's.

While it would likely be difficult, if not impossible, to find anything about that specific Tempo amp, given its fairly generic/popular configuration for the time, it was probably sold as any number of other budget amps under different names, depending on who bought it from the manufacturer back in the day to sell under their own "label". There was a lot of that going on back then.

Double-check that tube layout. The 6AV6 is a single triode amplifier, roughly the same performance as one triode of a 12AX7 (amplification factor = 100). I'll bet that's your tremolo tube. The 6AQ5 is an output tube and is close in performance to a 6V6GT crammed into a sub-mini bottle.

I thought the 6AQ5 was a EL84?

Wait I'm wrong. The 6AQ5 is like the 6V6's & the 6BQ5 is like the EL84.
I wonder if a 6V6 is a plug in replacement just like the EL84 is for the 6BQ5?

The 6AQ5 is a seven pin miniature tube and not an octal base like the 6V6.

Hi.

Thanks for posting, it always makes me feel good to see old tube amps guts.

By posting this amp thread, You will find someone who has the same amp, and has been searching for info. Sooner or later. If You want to maximise the probability of something like that happening more quickly, a larger traffic site could be an answer. And/or a site that's high on Google search hierarchy.

One such site is www.talkbass.com and You can find lots of old amp designers and techs over there as well.

Regards
Sam

I have the same amp but a different problem, on mine the volume pot doesn't work and when you turn it, it kinda acts as a tone control. Weird huh? Anyone know what's wrong with it? And I must say it sounds sweet with a tube-screamer pushing the tubes.
