I met Jeff Allen from Blackstar Amplification this Wednesday. I was given the chance to play through the Blackstar HT Club 40 Combo. I was really impressed with the tones and capability of the amp. I now have an interest in checking out the Series One 200 Head. Any feedback you guys can give me good or bad would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know more before I jump in as I have done before. Thanks.

From what I've read so far the 100watter seems to get very positive reviews and the 200 gets dogged. I haven't tried one yet and that's always best to do of course but I just wanted to let you know that peeps are saying the 100 watter sounds best so far between these 2.

Could you say what impressed you with the Blackstar HT Club 40 Combo ?
I'm thinking of looking at the HT Studio 20 Head paired with a 2x12 cab for live use in small clubs/pubs.
The whole band is miced so volume won't be an issue provided I can hear myself over our heavy handed (& footed !) drummer !!

The cleans were dark yet jangly and responded well with pick attack and agression. The amp would crunch out well but I really enjoyed the Goldtop through it when overdriven. It just cried and responded perfectly in a Gary Moore kind of way. Compressed sustain but not limited and lifeless. I hope the Series One 100 head proves not to be a turd. I thought the HT Club 40 had a Vintage 30 but it didn't. It was loaded with the stock G12-P80 Celestion (Chinese?). Fooled me and that's hard to do. The EL34 voicing was great. It was everything the Splawn Quickrod I ordered was suposed to be. Think Hot Rodded Marshall with no need for an OD pedal. In addition the amp had two types of reverb, Spring and Plate. I prefered the later.

I think I see the Blackstar making its way into my studio real soon.

When Ian Robinson and Bruce Keir quit Marshall’s acclaimed R&D department about four years ago with other Marshall employees, there was understandably plenty of conjecture within the industry about what they would be doing. This was largely met with silence, until now that is. Following on from the launch of Blackstar’s valve-powered pedals, we can now see what Ian and Bruce have been up to with the unveiling of the Blackstar Artisan range of hand-wired amps. Blackstar’s first amps combine high build quality with the multi-layered touch-sensitive tonality you’d normally associate with a top-dollar American product. But as they are built in Korea, they are accessible and not just the stuff of dreams. We caught up with Ian and Bruce to check out the superlative A100 stack (reviewed in issue 300). But first of all, we asked why anyone would quit designing amps for Marshall…

Ian Robinson: “There’s no doubt that if you’re into electronics and rock guitar then designing amplifiers for Marshall is probably the best job in the world, and we were privileged to be those designers. However, if you work as an amp designer for a company like Marshall you’re naturally constrained to develop products that fit what people have come to expect from the brand. They have to have a certain look, response and tone. Bruce and I had lots of ideas for products that we knew wouldn’t be right for Marshall and over time we slowly came to the realisation that the only way we would ever bring those designs to fruition would be to do them ourselves. Ultimately, we wanted to excel at what we do and achieve our potential as a design team, so we made the massive decision to leave. We started with the launch of our pedal range last year, now you’re seeing the first amps to come off the production line – and at last we can talk about them!”

I played through the 5w HT head into a 4x12 today and really liked it.
Everything set at noon and the sound was just right (for me).
Clean channel just on the edge of breakup, overdrive channel had a nice tight crunch.
I'm seriously looking at a HT Venue Studio 20 + 2x12 for live use.
I also tried the Vox Night Train - very nice tone but only single channel, Orange Twin Terror - good but not as good as the Blackstar - a bit more of a 70's tone and a Hayden MoFo - didn't really like this at all - seemed very sterile.

What I like about the HT5 is that it gets all of its tone from solid state (it's called the Infinite Shape Feature or ISF) and then goes into the one 12AX7 to convert it into what only a tube can do. As my older brother said, this amp is sort of like a small Dual Reverb 900. SS front end and then you put a tube right where it needs to go. The preamp is also designed for stomp boxes.

All I know is I tried all of the other small amps and they didn't perform like this. The 10 inch Celestion speaker is on the cheap side. I'm thinking of putting in a good one. I use this with my half stack and it sounds like a much larger amp. That's what I was trying to say earlier, that it sounds like a higher wattage amp.

This puppy is loaded with all the good stuff. Most small amps don't have a 16 ohm output. This one has a 16 and a 8. FX loop with level control.

Had chance to try the HT 40 Club Combo & the HT 20 Studio head into a 2x12.
The 20w & 2x12 sounded fuller to me although there an additional couple of push button selections on the 40w.
Likely to be trading my TSL122 in for the Blackstar soon.

I've tried the Blackstar valve overdrive pedal and it is good but requires it's own 18v? power supply, so you need another plug for it.
I also tried one of the amps and that was also good.

My HT Studio 20 head arrived this morning.
I've also bought an empty Peavey 2x12 cab and will be loading 2 x G12 Century's as soon as it arrives.
