I think I have some of the members thinking this is your girl. I even saved it as, "Joe's Chick." Hee-hee.

Hey man. Happy Easter before I forget. I think I go eat out someplace good tonight.

Blues n Cues has got me hungry with the picture of that big Boston Butt roast.

Maybe I'll go to Golden Corral and eat all the steak, prime rib and jumbo shrimp I can handle.

Yes you can overdrive the power tubes in a DSL/TSL, but you have to make sure you don't have too much preamp distortion going to them. And to get any tube distortion in a 1987 or 1959, it has to be real loud. When the 4 holers came out, everybody used loud rigs as only the vocals and a light drum mix came through the cheesy PA's of that era. That's why they made the Ampeg SVT. LOUD MF! Everyone cranked their 4 holers and that was just the norm back then. It became the "Marshall sound."

Well as I said, I hadn't played it that much, so after replacing the speakers, I thought I would check the bias and the tubes. I was shocked to see that I had a Raytheon Black Plate in V1. This was from back when we all went nuts over the Black Plate and I did a segment on the Preamp Tube thread about running the BP's in "all" slots. In that article, I stated that I didn't really like the BP's back to back. Somehow, I pulled all the BP's out except for V1 under the can. I have played it since doing that tube rolling and I thought it sounded good. Then I put a "real" V1 tube in it and it was like, "Oh yeah...better."

The Mullards are the shitz. They can be clean and they can get nasty. Of course, in my TSL, the preamp is making all the distortion. The Mullards are running clean and just reproducing what the preamp is hitting them with. Even so, they kick ass. I would like to try them in a cranked 1987 to hear how they sound in a 4 holer.

How's it sound? Spectacular. Blows those old JBL's away. I just wasn't able to crank the amp as the JBL's were only 30 watts each. It ended up setting a lot. I revived my speaker thread and got to talking about how good that pairing was and then I found out that Eminence had discontinued them. However, I was able to find them at Musician's Friend. They were both discounted by $5 and the shipping was free. They came from Kansas City and I got them in three days. I had the amp all ready to put them in. This is the amp with the xF2 Mullard EL34's. They were a little troublesome as I was barely able to bias them on the low side of the pot. I have them at 75mV a pair right now and it sizzles. I don't have any sealed cabs right now, as I sold them all when I moved, but this pairing works very well in an open back cab. I love it.

In regard to "guys reading the Preamp Tube thread," they need to read all of it since we all have changed our opinions several times.

I hope the read were the 12BZ7 was a "fail." The first part of it sounds enticing, because Josh was so hot to try them. The last part I'm saying don't go there.
