Well you will want to make sure there is enough room to swap the 5881's for 6L6GC's. There are a lot more 6L6 tubes out there and you will want to be able to use them. 5881's are short 6L6 tubes. Only two preamp tubes? Must be like the NT. One gain tube and a PI. Of course if you were to use a 7025 that was rated at 30-30, it would probably wail like a two dollar whore. That would be the first tube I would want to try. A high gain 7025. It would be Heaven and Hell.

Are they still hand wired, or is the RI on a PCB? Makes a difference. How many preamp tubes? What are the power tubes?

Well I think any guitar amp with a rectifier tube is going to be warmer sounding. Heck, Leo Fender stole an RCA amp design and Jim Marshall stole a Fender design. Fact is, all of their older amps had rectifier tubes. The only reason they stopped was for cost cutting.

That's a pretty pricey amp isn't it? Aren't they on the rare side? What price range have you found and year model?

Oh, another thing. The Preamp Tube thread is just seven posts away from 1,000. Can you believe it? There's been some good info and some great laughs. I've really enjoyed knowing you even though you live a long ways off. It's been a real pleasure.

Yeah I saw it too. No telling what shape it's in. It's not the Mother Lode like it was getting hyped to be. Sounds like one head and a 1960 cab and some FX pedals. The head description was funky. I wonder if it is even a tube head? I'm not interested. Did you ever find out where that place was? It was listed in the Seattle Craig's List.

Hey this was posted last night by Kendall. He lives in the Seattle area. Some dude left his wife and she has all of his Marshall's for sale. If any of it is good, I might be interested if I could get you to ship it for me. It all depends on what she really has. She didn't list any thing. It could be another fake-out listing. We'll see. Here is the Craig's List link: liquidation of equiptment

I don't see a problem with the RFT's at 75 per cent. I usually bump up between 2 and 4 points on the high side. I doubt if you are going to say, "Wow, this is biased too hot!" You should be able to tell that its got a little more punch to it. Your clean channel is a good gauge on whether your bias is too hot. At 75%, I think the clean channel will be just fine. The good thing is you can always turn it down if it is sounding too hot. Martimus

I don't know what to say about those Tung-Sol's. I wonder if just one tube is drifting and it of course will look like both of them are. I had a set of Winged =C='s that did the same thing. I ended up putting them in an 800 and they worked fine in that amp. It's a good thing, cuz I was getting ready to trash them. There's no way to tell which tube is the culprit. If you try them again and they drift, I would be concerned. They could end up drifting to the hot side. That sucks, cuz Tung-Sol is supposedly a solid tube, but you know how it is, there are so many that fail, because they are tubes.

When I'm doing sheet like this, I have the back panels off and I am facing the tubes. If they go to drift towards the high side, you have to be like a cat to shut the power or standby so the old Red Plate Demons don't ruin your tubes. I don't like that drifting sheet. That's why my 122 went into the shop. It was drifting up and red plating. Now I can't have that, can I. Martimus
