Far Out! I'm glad it worked out for you. I enjoyed my experience modding my Valve Jr. greatly. It isn't a bad little amp, especially for the price, but it does have it's limitations. Let me know how it goes turning it into a reverb unit.

I finally modded my Valve Jr. I never did do the bitmo mod but something similar. I changed out a bunch of caps too. Completely pulled R1 (drop down resistor) and a bunch of other stuff. I looked at the Mercury Magnetics kit but it was too much so I ordered a Hammond OPT but it was too harsh so I tried a Heyboer and it was nice.

    Still, 5w is just 5w.

I have a Dr. Z Carman Ghia amp on layaway that uses el84 (I did it before the Marshall Haze and the Vox Night Train came out) so I may buy a spring tank and tweak the Valve JR and turn it into a tube reverb driver. Then 5w would be more than enough, of course I would probably want to go with a 6v6 so it will be cleaner. That will be a little more work but the journey is as good as the destination.

Thanks again for inspiring me to crack open the Epi.

Hey Hollowbody... I was just curious if you ever did any mods on your Valve Junior?

And also, I doubt there are any sonic benifits by having more engraving on a neck.

Great shots of the Epi. Thanks, I guess a picture IS worth a thousand words. The lights in my tiny skull are turning on with each pic. Good forethought on taking photos of the process.

    Thanks again.

Either way, the Hollowbody PRS is a sweet axe. And I hear ya on the birds, I wanted them too, but when I came accross my Ten-Top w/ Moon Inlays I just couldn't pass it up. It really is a thing of beauty.

I think that w/ a few relatively simple mods you'll be really pleased w/ your Valve Jr. I found that mine had a nice range of tones available and was very dynamic, it just didn't have enough clean headroom for me. It did, however respond very nicely to distortion and overdrive pedals.

    Rock on...

PS... I'll add some photos of the mod work on the Valve Jr to my Past Gear folder. Feel free to look if you are bored!

No piezo. I regret it now but I didn't know it was even an option when I got it. I thought about getting it put in but haven't yet. I heard a guy with a decent Strat that had the X-Bridge and that sounded really good. I also don't have PRS bird inlays but that guitar is still a great workhorse.

Thanks for the Bitmo info and thanks for the friendship.

Does your PRS have the piezo system? If so... How do you like it?

Hi There. Sadly, I no longer have the Valve Jr. It was one of the pieces of the gear that I sold to round up enough $$$ to get my Marshall. However... I thought it sounded great. I did mod it, but I never bothered w/ the transformers. I did the BitMo trio mods, and found on eBay (which I can no longer seem to find) another mod kit that I did in addition to the BitMo Trio that they called a "Monster Mod". I put in a tone knob, w/ push-pull pot for a bass boost, a three-way voicing toggle circit, and a pentode-triode switch. When it was done it definately got into a nice Marshallesque crunch zone tone-wise. Very nice, but not enough gain for my taste (I LOVE my TSL).

Hey, just dropped by. I checked out your page and I saw you have a Valve JR and it looks like it has been modded. I have one and I am trying to figure out what to do since there are so many different mods. I know some people use the Hammond or Webber transformers and some are doing the Mercury Magnetics mod. Mine sounds ok but I know it can be much better and I need the class A sound. How does yours sound?
