The best Marshall amp ever....

I thought this would be an interesting thread. What does everyone consider the best Marshall amp ever made and why? Are some better than others? I have a JCM2000 2003 model DSL100 and I think its a great amp. I have also seen on the threads that it depends on numerous things such as tubes, tube combos, transformers, ptp, pcb, mods. That you can have the same model amp but from from one to the other they are different. Also seems that I have seen that most Marshall amps have issues that are common to their respective model.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

I like the DSLs. Great amps. My favorite? I just have a list of amps I like. The DSL is up there with the Jubilee, JCM800 2204, JTM45.

That's because in they buy in bulk and use what is there and those components can vary in value ratings but still be within a usable range. where as some Boutique guys check every component that will go on the board

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

I'd be pushing it to say the DSL line is the best, over the 800's, so probably the 800 and the DSL second for versatility. 800's are in so much rock music.

Page's SLP-1959 which was modded with KT-88's so he could have 200 watts.

I like my DSL. Its not the worlds number one amp, but I really like mine. You can get a lot of desirable tones.

(Year 1987 to 1989) JCM 800 2210/2205. The real deal!! Out of all of my Marshalls these are by far my favorite. When biased correctly they don't need an OD pedal. Have a listen to the Link below.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

Best for what? The little battery amp is best for picnics.

I love my DSL 50, but the 800 series are great, the VM's are great, plexi's are great..."best" is a silly notion. You're better off asking which Marshalls to avoid....like a Mode 4 if you play in an apartment or an SLX if you play country music.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

I play a DSL100, but for all time...

JCM800 for lower/medium gain rock tones.
Jubilee for higher gain rock tones.

The JCM800 just has that perfect crunchy but round Marshall tone that you hear on so many great recordings; everything from Guns N' Roses to Thin Lizzy.

The Jubilee has that great JCM800 reminiscent sound but takes it into the stratosphere. The JCM900 does a great job also, but it just doesn't have the balls of a cranked Jubilee

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

You are right Ken. I forgot about the battery powered Marshall. Its great when I am on duty and can't bring a big amp. Also correct in the rewording of which Marshall's we should stay away from.

I'd say the 6100 30th anniversary series is the best sounding versatile marshall, at least a hell of a lot better than the DsL. Just my opinion though

as far as "the best one" for my style it is definitely the JCM 800 2203 with 6550's. After that I'd have to say the Vintage Modern 2466. I love the sound of the plexis also, but just way too damn loud an unpractical for a player like myself.

I'm sure a TSL that's defective (way out of bias) sounds like crap..but a propertly set up TSL is a great professional amp.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

No tube amp is necessarily bad. I have heard amazing 900's and awful sounding DSL's. It's all about how the amp is set up and how you use it.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

I originally looked at a used TSL100. I ended up getting the DSL. I have had it a few weeks and I love it so far. I am aware of the solder point problem they had. I have had no issues yet. This is my first Marshall Tube amp. I have had Marshall hybrids, and SS. I have other tube amps-Got a Peavey C30 with a G12 and it sounds very cool-especially on the clean channel. I have only been playing a short time. I am originally a drummer for about 28 years. I am 42 now and wanted to try a different instrument. I started the thread because I will learn through playing through the amp., and getting info and opinions through you guys. What I found so far is you guys know a great deal about these things.

I've tested them back to back, at good volume, in a sound proof room. I know what they sound like. No, they don't sound like the exact same amp but you can hear some JCM800 in the Jubilee.

I actually own both and the Jube is nothing like the '800. The bass and mids are completely different as is the general volume.

I like both

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

The true Marshall sound is divided into two distinct camps, before master volume, and after master volume. Before master volume, people 'mastered and slaved' Marshall heads to create the 'overdriven sound' by pushing one head into another, creating a complicated form of the "Master volume " as we know it now. The new camp is the 'after master volume camp' that uses the Marshall as we know it today. I am a fan of todays Marshall. One 1/2 stack, three chords and the truth.

Then, there's the channel switchers and the '45 is a bit of in a class of its own.

Re: The best Marshall amp ever....

I have nothing compared to some here but the best marshall amp? sounds like a question that might be geared toward choosing just one to own and that is something that I have to take a stand against - just playing. I love my dsl and I love my jubilee. But I love them both together just that much more.

Not to change the topic but...

How about...what is the best combination of marshall amps? for stereo or dual mono? switching between? running one dry and one wet?
