Re: Your first Marshall amp

I have been thinking about the DSL401 as my first Marshall amp. What are the pros and cons of this model; in your opinion? I want a tube Marshall that I will not have to worry about problems. I think some of the 401s had overheating problems (earlier models). How is the clean sound coming from it? I use a Les Paul Classic with '59 Duncans in it and a Hamer Studio Custom with covered '59s in it. Classicplayer |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
Some of the older ones have a heat problem
but the newer ones dont have that problem, the con is the speaker that comes with it, its real cheap, but put a Vintage 30 in it and they sound a whole lot better. Other pros are the incredible clean chanel and the high gain is even better. They really sound good through a 4 12 cab, i love mine. here is a couple soundbites i did with mine the first one by its self the second through my Marshall 1960a 4 12 cab YouTube - New Marshall DSL 401 Combo with V-30 and JJ tubes YouTube - Marshall DSL 401 combo through 4 12" cab . |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
I have had the following problems with mine, which I bought in 2000:
The tube heater rectifier died after about 2.5 years and Marshall replaced it under waranty FOC. It's been fine since. This was a common fault with the early build amps, but has been fixed now. I broke a PCB track when the channel switching jack plug got bashed with the lead plugged in. This was outside the warranty period, so I fixed it myself. I've changed the power tubes and inverter tube to JJ's I built a matching 1x12 cab that has a G12 T75 in it. The original speaker is still in the amp itself and sounds fine to me, although I have thought about changing it for a Vintage 30 or G12H. I don't have much experience with other Marshall amps, but I'm told that the clean channel on the DSL 401 is perhaps the best they've ever done. The OD channels are IMHO fine for classic rock and blues, especially if you don't overdo the gain. One thing that is clear is that the 401 sounds like a Marshall, but it is softer that the big tube Marshalls. Personally I really like it and would probably buy another if it broke. That said I am thinking about a Ceriatone Marshall 18W, 36W or 50W clone. Oh, and here's a pic of my set up.. ![]() Cheers!

Re: Your first Marshall amp
What is the "heat reduction" mod? Is that something Marshall put into the newer DSL 401s', or is added by the owners? I have also been thinking about the AVT 50 watt model. What are the main differences in sound when comparing it to the 401? Is it just that one sounds like a tranny' and the other
does not (4o1)? My main concern is to get an amp that will be relatively - trouble free with no obvious or well-known design defects. Classicplayer |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
The heat modification needs to be done on older
401's the newer ones have already been modified at the factory. Here is a link that explains it and even shows how to do it historiclespauls.com - piller.at MUSIC - Marshall DSL201/401 The AVT50 is an excelent amp, has a great preamp and uses a ECC83 tube like the bigger amps. But the output is solid state. Both amps need to hae thier speakers changed out gecause they put cheap ones in them at the factory. I put Vintage 30's in both my AVT50 and 401 |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
My first Marshall was a solid state 5210 1x12 combo.
It was my workhorse for almost 10 years. It needed a repair at least once a year. I still have it to this day and it still works and sounds pretty good.

Re: Your first Marshall amp
I was hooked on the top of the line Peaveys and had a Mace Black Widow combo and a Renown 212 with Scorpions. I was used to them and I got a pretty good sound. Then in 1982, I played an 800, 100 watt head and I bought it immediately. My first Marshall and the second year of the 800. The 800 didn't have the channel switching I was used to, but rolling the volume control is what you had to do to bring the beast out. I wish I still had it.

Re: Your first Marshall amp
JCM 900. I don't even remember what 900 it was. I was a total tube noob and knew nothing about them especially their up keep. When the tubes went I packed it in the closet and it sat for a few years until a friend offered to buy it. Sold it to him for $250 I think. He re tubed it and it worked just fine.
I like what I have now and I can take care of it. Its like I deserve this one cause I "can" take care of it and play it like it should be...cranked! I don't think I ever cranked the 900 to be honest. I just didn't know what the heck I was doing then hehe. Whenever I see dcooper in a thread I have to comment on the fact it was his vids of the DSL that I ended up with one. Still happy about it too!

Re: Your first Marshall amp
Mine is my current JCM900 4100 from 1995. I bought it off Ebay for $1100 after a long time waiting, on a random browse of ebay suggested by my mums boyfriend, I saw it, and was like "Omgnowaithisistoogoodtobetrue" a JCM series Marshall in my price range. So I immediately bought it, and that weekend drove to Melbourne and picked it up (This was in March).
I played it for about 3 weeks, and then one day I decided to crank it up, and I blew a tube, it was out of action for a month or two before I bought some new tubes, KT77's on advice from Eurotubes (My amp came with 6L6's). But I must've damaged the bias circuit, because these tubes wouldn't bias, it just kept drifting up, so in order to make sure it was all gonna work, I took it in to the local tech, where it remained for the next month. Today, a few hours ago, I got it back, with new Groove 6L6's and no fear of it blowing up again, because of a clean bill of health reported by the tech, sounds great, especially once you get past about 4 on the volume knob. Next stop on this amp - Switching to EL34s and finding the perfect combo of N.O.S preamp tubes.

Re: Your first Marshall amp
Hi.
My first marshall was, and still is, this: ![]() Bought it from the bloke who was supposed to become our singer, but loved booze more than music. The deal was done in 1986, 1AM in a Saturday morning while partying like kids party in the streets . The deal included two Finnish PA cabs of REWATT brand, equipped with cast frame 15" Celestions and a St. David POS microphone. A few others followed, a 60W SS Bass combo, JMP1959 with 4*12 and 2*15 JCM800 Bass cabs, a few SS guitar combos, etc. Regards Sam Last edited by T-Bird; 07-05-2009 at 12:14 PM. Reason: Typos |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
My first Marshall was and still is my little mg15 microstack, mg's have a bad rep and most are horrible but I actually really like mine I can get a very nice sound out of it. I had just been playing guitar 3 months and was at my local GC trying out guitars and amps for my christmas presents, I didn't really like many until I went to the marshalls. They blew me away compared to the other fender, line 6, and peaveys I had been playing. When i first plugged a guitar in a Marshall I knew thats what I wanted. I paired it with an Epi les paul standard and was ready to go. I soon hope to be getting my first valve amp though, either a dsl 100 or jcm 800 havent decided yet. Then maybe I will pair that with and old Kramer baretta...

Re: Your first Marshall amp
My first Marshall I no longer own. It was the 2007 special edition white MG100DFX half stack. Used that with my first real band from July 2007 to March 2008. I wrote about six songs for us (the other's were new to being in a band so I did all of the writing, lyrics and all) and then those guys (who were all about 2 or 3 years younger then me) kicked me out and got their buddy to play guitar for them. Out and out stole my songs. Luckily enough they were such bad musicians that a month after they kicked me out the other guitarist couldn't remember how to play the songs (he was terrible back then) and they wrote 3 new songs and broke up. Anyway, I sold the mg in December to a kid that was obsessed with white tolexed amps and in February I bought my JCM 2000 TSL. I'm actually looking into buying a used lead 100 mosfet as a back up head.

Hi.

2003 Master PA pics + Q, mfg. date? The amp has been hibernating for a decade or so, I have new tubes for it, but the correct caps are still missing from my inventory. I could always empty the old ones and mount modern ones inside, but I haven't. At least not yet .Last time it was in use it sounded like someone was walking inside, so a little TLC is in order. When it worked, it was quite silent as far as hiss is concerned. Paired with a Shure SM58 and some old Celestion equipped PA cabs, the sound is something to die for. If You happen to like old tube tone for vocals. I gigged with it quite a few times when I was young. The controls are: Tone and Volume for each of the 4 channels and the normal Precence/Bass/Middle/Treble tonestack for the Master volume. Really good looking Hiwatt You have there marantz1300. I think that old PA amps are greatly underrated when it comes down to amplification. That is a shame, but in the same time a blessing, they can be had for peanuts compared with their more desirable brothers. Regards Sam |

I had been playin' local gigs with varying amps since 1976, I had a Sunn 200s head and a Concert bass cab. then and after that, it was mostly Fenders and Peaveys. (I was always 'making due'). In '93 I was in a blues band called "N.S.F." and I was playing through a blackface Twin Reverb reissue, and constantly struggling with pedals (TS 9, Tube driver, etc.). It was then that I ordered a Marshall JTM 60 Combo 3x10 from Musicians Friend. I routed it through my twin and I was in heaven!! I sent the signal through the emulated out into the front of the twin ... 3x 10 celestion + 2x12 Jensen Holy Moley!!! My JTM broke.. I melted the power output tubes
I had it in the shop many times but that was truly the end, I got my DSL & 1960 in Austin just before the JTM finally died in '03 (RIP). It took me sooo long to finally realize my sound. I am so glad I got that first Marshall, because now I respect the one I have even more. (I'm 51 years old and still on fire)For me, Marshall is the one ---J---

Re: Your first Marshall amp
My first Marshall was an early JMP 2203. It was like flying an F-14 Tomcat compared to the solid state Fender London Reverb head I had used up til then.
I also had an original Nady tube overdrive back then. I wish I still had it. I also wish I still had all the strats I have bought and sold. |

Re: Your first Marshall amp
I think my first one was a MG15 about 10 years ago. After that I tried a MG100 combo, which back then, I thought was alright. Then for the last 7 years I've been shopping around, trying to find the perfect amp for me, with no success. I was ignoring marshall 'cause I tried the valvestate series and the TSL's and thought they sounded horrible. Then I came across DSL's about 2 years ago and fell in love with 'em.
Now I have a DSL50 head & a 1960a cab, which I would consider my first REAL Marshall amp. It kicks ass. |
