JMP 2203 and pedals
Hi
i was considering a 1976 JMP 2203 and i would like to read some impressions from you about this amp. I overally love that 70's hot rodded sound, but have some concerns about how it takes pedals, as i use tons of them. My sound is somewhat overdriven hi-gain (though not metal high gain, think more of Dinosaur Jr, Smashing pumpkins etc..) and i love fuzz (big-muff, fuzz factory etc). I also use lots of psychedelic ambient textures (stacked delays, modulation, reverbs, think of 90's Shoegaze/dream pop). How would such an amp take heavy effects usage? I know it doesnt'have an fx loop, so the whole fx chain including delay/reverbs would be used in face of it. And also how would it take fuzzes? (i suppose they sound best with very clean amps..). Would a Vintage Modern fit my style better (with the fx loop and all the other bells and whistles)? The head i'm considering has EL34's. |

However using a lot of fuzz and following with a lot a modulation effects before the amp will create a washy, non distinct tone. Especially if you are overdriving the amp a bit too, which you better be!! ![]() For amount and type of effects that you are using a Vintage Modern might well suit you better. Failing that, some of the JMP variations and clones do have FX Loops and would be worth checking out.

Re: JMP 2203 and pedals
If you get most of your distortion from pedals, you could plug those into your time based or modulation effects, then go into the 2203 low gain input, and get a very good tone. You could also do a similar thing with a VM set to low dynamic range. To me the VM has more gain in high dynamic range than the 2203 high gain input, and you can place the modulation and time based effects farther down the gain structure in the VM's effect loop.
I've owned both amps and liked them both, but the VM seems to be more versatile. I much prefer the VM to a 2203, but of course YMMV. The only thing the VM won't do as well as the 2203 is crushing metal tones. |
