2061x Handwired Head 20 Watts... What Cabinet?

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum so a big hello to everybody.
I am in the blessed position of picking up a 2061x Handwired Head 20 Watts... What cabinet is good for it? (UK - £690 with a Cornford 1x12 cab... not a bad price I think).
I know there is the 2061cx Cab made for it, but I was wondering if anybody with this head had tried other cabs.
4x12.....2x12.....Greenbacks....

What are your thoughts?

The 2061CX or a 1936 (both are 2x12") would be ok with G12M-25's, might sound a bit noddy. But they would sound incredible if you got the quid to put some Celestion Blue Alnico's in

I use mine '73 2061 through a 1965A cab (4x10"). Can't remember what elements it got, but at least it's celestion.
4x10" sound different than 2x12", depends on what sound you're after.

What are the Blue Alnicos? What do they sound like and are they in other cabs as standard?

I play rock and look for a harmonically rich sound that shows up overtones and for leads I may well add a little drive before the amp (volume boost/Drive).

The speakers make such an enormous difference perhaps all I can do is use the Cornford 1x12 while I take the head and a Les Paul around a few shops to try lots of different cabs.

I collect the amp this week... I cant wait... its like Christmas.... I feel like running around the kitchen wetting myself. Acceptable at age 2....not good at 39 years!

Do you think an amp this size can properly drive a 4x12?

I have the Marshall 2061x and the 2061cx and the 19060ax cab with Greenback( already sold it).

I have compared them and my preference goes to the 2061cx. The cab with the Greenbacks in general sounded brighter in comparison. Nice sound but I feet the 2061cx is a better match for the head.

Re: 2061x Handwired Head 20 Watts... What Cabinet?

originally they came with a 1x12, theres been a few of them on ebay recently. but few people actually know what cab it is they've got. ive read all kinds of rubbish in the ebay descriptions. they arent listed in the doyle book so people usually think they are organ cabs.

anyway heres a couple...

Vintage Marshall 1x12 speaker cab from 1973 on eBay (end time 03-Nov-09 20:51:04 GMT)

Marshall cabinet 1970's on eBay (end time 07-Nov-09 16:18:47 GMT) (incorrect logo)

they tend to sell for £200 - £250

those are the cabs that came with the original 2061 heads.

I would think a 2061x would sound good through a 4x12. I use a blackstar HT-5 with my 4x12's and thats only 5 watts.

If you want harmonically rich The Blue's are super rich.

Re: 2061x Handwired Head 20 Watts... What Cabinet?

Thanks for the info guys, really helpful.

Some experimenting coming up I think with speakers and cabs.... should be great fun! I may look for a 2061cx as it is matched or the original cabs suggested by George. My problem with the 2061cx is the cost.

I will perhaps experiment with a few different speakers in a cab (blue alnicos' perhaps), I have access to a cab I can open up and use as a mule.

I know the head is matched by Marshall/Celestion to speakers and God knows I will not be able to out R&D them in my shed (though the British created half our best products in sheds) but Marshall are trying to faithfully replicate a certain era of sound, where as I can look for something more individual and to my liking.

My mate just suggested a Ring Modulator I got a bit worried until he explained what one was and showed me one on You Tube - cheeky **** - excuse me while I nail him to a tree!

Very difficult to get a true idea of sound on You Tube for the Blue Alnicos but from what I hear they really ring. They seem to be used in MatAmp cabinets, so it should not be too difficult to give a cab a run with the head when I get it to properly test them. Thanks MajorNut1967
