DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I think that I hate this button on the DSL. It sucks out the mids and sounds bad with a Duncan JB in the bridge position. I've always liked Warren Demartini's tone, and it's very mid dominant. JB pickups and vintage 30 speakers. That mid button sounds boomy and twangy at the same time to me.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
You guys are absolutely right. That button is for the children and bedroom players alike. You can't use that thing scooped in a band setting, it turns to mud when standing a few feet away and mixed with the other instruments of the band. I hate that button, but I'll tell you what the little metal kiddies like is to tune down to X, Y, or drop Z and use the mid scoop button and the deep button at the same time. lol.
Glad you guys are on the same page.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
mid scoop buttons on any amp suck. Its for 13 year old kids that just got into metallica and the only thing they wanna do is play nothing else matters at a school assembly

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I just got my DSL100 from fedex and plugged it in and played. My first real marshall tube amp and I wish I could take that tone shift option off. I had it on for a grand total of 2min. I do like the classic channel, very cool. Not a fan of the crunch channel though.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I find the Crunch/Lead channel to be a little muddy. I'm not a big fan of that one either. The classic one can sound pretty good with some pedals and/or a boost. I was going to throw in some KT77's in there and maybe change the transformer like some do to get different tones but I'm just going to leave it stock since I've got a pair of 800's. Trying to trade my DSL100 with another fellow on here for a 900 SL-X.
I just don't need diversity in an amp is all. The DSL is a fine amp just not my style anymore.

Paramedic, give it some time. As you play with it and learn to dial it in, you'll find that each channel has something to offer (except Ultra II maybe). The Classic crunch mode is useful for getting more breakup when you can't crank the clean up that loud. I can make the Ultra I channel sound a lot like my friend's 1987 clone by backing off the gain, turning up the master, and tweaking the tone controls for a little less treble.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I also have a DSL50 head and love it. I run it through a 4x12 Vintage Modern cab. I never use the mid scoop button. It ruins the sound in my opinion. It sort of defeats the purpose of owning a Marshall amp. If you want a "scooped" sound like 80s Metallica, just turn the mids down a bit and there you go. Awesome.

Congrats on the new amp by the way! The crunch voicing on the green channel is great with OD pedals. Sometimes pure sex if done right.

The Brisith tone (either Vox, vintage or modern Marshall) is characterized by pronounced mids. Use them!

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
The mid scoop sounds crappy in the room, and makes the guitar vanish in the mix with a live band...BUT recorded it has an application if you want another option for a different tone. The fact I've used it for just one song in the past year however suggests it's fairly useless to me...

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I never use the mid scoop button either. I also never use the deep switch. The amplifier has enough bass response as it is and as other people have pointed out, the mids are the most important thing when standing out in the mix.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
Today I changed all the tubes, pre and power and biased at about 38. Every channel on this thing came alive. I still don't like the tone shift but I am warming up to the crunch channel. Green channel sounds great with a OD1. Used amp so I thought it would be a good idea to change valves. Its a 2003 model. It did have the Winged C Svetlana's in it but I went to JJ's. I got em in my Peavey C30 and they sound good. Any thoughts on the winged C's. I've heard good and bad.

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I've been using the DSL50 for around a year and a half now. I still haven't been able to find the tone i've been looking for. Can anyone suggest to me some presets for a "maiden" esque sound?

Using EH EL34s biased at around 17.5W idle dissipation. Using four EH12AX7s with a selected high gain valve in V1. Using a Strat with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, JB Jrs. or Quarter Pounds (just to give an idea as your guitar might differ to mine in sound). At rehearsal, I use the Ultra Gain channel Lead I with the humbuckers and Lead II with single coils. Approximate settings are Bass: 4, Mid: 5, Treble: 2, Presence: 6.5, Gain: 8, Master Volume: 4 or above. To get a Maiden style sound at low volume I'll use the Ultra Gain Lead II setting with a touch more presence and the mids around 4 or a bit less. As others have said regarding this amp on this forum, the amp really comes to life when you crank it up past four but I find that Lead II gets thick distorted sounds at low volumes if you take the time to dial it in. When I first bought my DSL-50, I had trouble getting the right sound and it turned out that the amp had bad solder joints. Now, it's exactly what I was after. Good luck! |

Re: DSL50 Tone shift button (mid scoop)
I have the DSL 100 and don't use mine. I do usually use the deep setting though.
