What strings with a JCM800 fort standard tuning?

For standard tuning...type o on the topic. Again...

I have been using mesas or SS preamp racks most my life and only this past year have I gone marshall. So before that I had a darker tone.

I have always used Ernie Ball hybrid slinkys, but was wondering is there a string more suited for the marshals lively mids and limited low end?

I was thinking coated strings may make it a little less piercing when I hit the high notes.

So what do you guys use? Style is 80's speed metal.

Pure nickel strings will be darker than the EB strings. I like GHS nickel rockers on my LP (R+RM 11-50). There are a lot of good pure nickel strings out there now. A lot of people like DR strings, but I don't like the feel of a round core.

DRs have great tone though I feel they break too quickly. I'm back on Elixir nanowebs after 2 years on DRs. 11 gauge.

On what guitar, with what pickups, made out of what wood? This is totally an open ended question that can't be answered with any real accuracy.

If you're after less treble, nickel wound nickel will do the trick though. Or just turning down the tone on the guitar or amp.

Re: What strings with a JCM800 fort standard tuning?

I change my strings monthly to avoid breakage, and I find thickness is all I care about. I use 10's. I've never found much difference in brands but I've never paid that much attention to them to be honest.

None! You don't put strings on your JCM 800!

A single G-string is cool but three or four are better.
But you cant put them on yourself, they have to be tossed up on the amp by groupies.

Re: What strings with a JCM800 fort standard tuning?

Dude..

Best string out there IMO (of course)..and I've experimented with just about every different string..

oh btw...strings brands make a HUGE difference in tone...and of course their constructional chareteristics..i.e round core, hex, nickel, coated, not coated..etc..

The new Dunlop nickle wounds! I freakin' LOVE those strings! For years and years I was a huge EB fan..specifically using their 'RPS' line to prevent breakage (I'm hard on low E, A, D strings) I always felt they sounded the best to my ears giving you that classic Gibson/Marshall sound..(i.e. Scorps..MSG, AC/DC ..etc)

However, I noticed that within the past couple of years EB had gotten very cheap on their products...packaging has gotten lame in where they put all of the strings together in one plastic package...and would make my fingers black right out of the package! Most importantly they didn't last as long as they use to..

Then I saw the add for the Dunlop strings and decided to give them a try..

First of all...SUPERB packaging..each string is packaged seperately, labled, sealed in plastic AND they even include a tiny desecant bag in the package to prevent corrosion!

Sound quality is very EB like..but even better...and they freakin' last a long time withstanding my brutal pick attack without breaking...they also bend more easily then other strings I've tried, and are smooth almost like a coated string..freakin' weird..

Best thing is the price..can get a set of 10s for only like $5.00! Thats a dollar cheaper then the poorly packaged, made EBs!

I just can't say enough about those strings...they are the best!

I don't think it make a differance what brand of strings you use, or gauge as there are too many other things in the set up that would effect the tune. The player being the main one!!

Re: What strings with a JCM800 fort standard tuning?

I personally like D'Addario 9 - 46 for standard E tuning. For standard D I'd use the tops from a 10 set and the bottoms from a D'Addario set -- this got expensive but I found a 10 - 48 set for this from GHS: The David Gilmour Blue, which I'll be trying out in a few weeks.

Re: What strings with a JCM800 fort standard tuning?

It's been awhile since I've made the rounds testing several brands of strings and comparing them but I'm a bit dubious about there being a huge difference in tone between them when you consider the simple fact that only a small handful of companies make strings. Everyone else buys from them and just stamps their own logo on them.

Out of curiosity, who does this? (not sarcastic; I really would like to know...)

Fender and Dean Markley are two companies that actually manufacture strings.
