Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
With most Marshalls, you'll probably want a pedal to get you to Death-land.
What about the Kerry King model?

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
It might, but there are lots of other distortion pedals out there that might be more your cup o' tea.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
With that budget, you'll be limited to something along the lines of the MG series. A tubescreamer, while it works well with an already overdriven Marshall tube amp, would not achieve your desired results on the MG, or in a bedroom setting. There are a number of good pedals that are for that type of heavily distorted tone...just need to play a few to see what catches your ear.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
Crossroads has some ideas. I use the JVM410H and it is absolutely nasty. The gain is ferocious. I think that JVM410H would surely get you good tones for death metal. But if you're on a budget, I'd also say an MG is a good choice. You also might way to look into some used AVT. Happy hunting.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
I would say with an MXR 108 *10 Band EQ*, and I am still looking for a pedal *chances are a modded Boss SD1 might be what I am looking at through Hot Tubes 70 on the forums, should get me the Death/Black Metal tone through a JCM 900 100 watt 2100 MK3 High Gain amp. If you keep checking Craigslist and even ebay, you should be able to find a JCM 900 which you can find in the 500 - 750 range! Also look for a JCM 900 SL-X amp as I have heard nothing but good about these amps! I am getting close to Acid Bath tones with my MK3 2100 with just an mxr 10 band eq! Or I might get another mxr 108 just to boost the gain even more! The JCM 800s are good amps but the 900s are one of my favorites!
Cheers, Charlie

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
if you mean Death, the band then that tone would be a Marshall Valvestate 8100. That's what Schuldiner used on pretty much everything from Human to Symbolic and more...

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
Well he's looking for versatility too, death metal to blues is a bit of a stretch without multiple channels or pedals. I tried to install high gain tubes to get metal sound and got the metal, lost the blues. If i had to do it all over again, I'd go for the best clean to crunchy Marshall tone I could get with the amp, then when I want the extra mega gain just tap the pedal. Its hard to get the best of both worlds with the same set of tubes without spending big $ on trying out different pre-amp tube combinations.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
If I were going extreme metal with a Marshall right now...I would get a JCM 900 SL-X (50 watt so I could crank it and drive it more) and back it up with a MXR 10-band EQ and throw in an MXR Dimeback distortion to get insane gain tones....if I needed it.

Considering I have avt and if that was stolen I would either try to buy one back cheap for like 250 (bassically you can find them for a low price) or I would look into Sovtek which is a full tube amp. Of course in a perfect world I would buy a Kerry King or a DSL. That's bassically it though with me. The Marshall I would suggest are the AVT and the old school heads.... |

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
The very best Marshall for metal is the Mode Four, System of a Down uses them for a reference point. They are solid state so the get real dirty, in a good way, and they're 350 watts. My Triple XXX is the absolute best metal amp I have ever heard, but it ain't a Marshall :-))

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
The AVT is no comparison to the Mode Four for metal, I don't care for the Mode Four at all, but my buddy had one for a few years and it was scary.....he plays that Black Metal stuff....the AVT is more tame and versatile. The Triple XXX is the KING of metal, it is too insane with the gain on 6, much less 10.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
My brother's XXX is insanely heavy, and on occasion, I get jealous. He's running it through a shitty Hartke cab to boot, and his tone is sick.
I'll do my penance for my blasphemy later.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
There are lots of different tones even for metal. Get any solid Marshall amp that has a good amount of gain. Any of the JCM's and boost the hell out of it with a pedal, maybe get an EQ too boost the thump if needed.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
I would think a Moded amp would be the
best Marshall for that. FJA has a mod for a Vintage Modern that is right up your ally They do metal mods for most Marshalls, the FJA Mod guy is even a member here, i wouldnt mind this mod myself check this out YouTube - FJA modded Marshall Vintage Modern Xtreme metal 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeelektEOMI |

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
Well with a pedal and eq the jcm 900 2100 mk3 rocks for a metal amp, however, my friend and guitar teacher, uses a 95 Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Solo amp and that has some gain that makes even my jcm 900 seem week but considering he was the former guitarist for Devil Driver *he started dd and quit to do his own thing*! I did get to play through it and his randall, the mb rocks just pure metal..

I got him a Randall 1X12 of some model when he got his guitar for his birthday, but I couldn't stand to look at it. Having my son plugged into something that didn't say Marshall on it made me queasy and uncomfortable. They have their purposes.

Re: best marshall for extreme metal?
If you need a good metal amp in that buget go for H&K or the MG. Maybe line 6 can help you too...
Or the Kerry King sig. but you cant buy that.
