Should I buy a 6100LM and sell the TSL or DSL?
Hi,
I found a guy who is selling a Marshall 6100LM 30th anniversary for $700 and I'm wondering if this is good deal and if it's worth it because I already have a TSL100 and a DSL100. Would a 6100LM be much better than the JCM2000 series? I know that the 6100LM was based on JCM900 which a lot of people really criticize. From other side, now, thanks to Marshall, with their new DSL100MLB price nobody can sell their DSLs. I tried to sell mine and people are offering me only $400. Is it 6100 worth additional $300? Thanks! |

the big blue is a very good sounding amp and quite versatile. if you can pick it up for 700 you'll be happy w/it. besides you can always get another tsl. go phills

I've had a 96' 6100lm for 3 yrs now , it's been an on/off relationship & sat for months at a time not being used, i was thinking of selling it until recently. It came to me pretty much stock with worn 5881's which were changed for 6l6's, even the change left me feeling underwhelmed, during the 3yrs i found a fault on the bias supply did the mods to full 6100 el34 spec, changed filter caps, added a choke, experimented with pre & power tubes & tidied up the wiring ( crap routing as standard ) the amps transformed now & a keeper. My advise would be give it a go but get the thing retubed ( if the low power has been used a lot the inside power tubes will be shot compared to the outers ) & maybe book an hour or 2 on a tech's bench to check for issues. If you like the sound of the 5881/6l6 then all's well, if not it's not a big job for a good tech to switch to 6100 spec ( about a dozen resistors & a few caps ), i prefer the 34's the amp has much more of the 800 feel to it. As Shawkey said you'll always be able to pick up another tsl/dsl & i can see the relative cheapness of the 6100/lm's ending before too long. |

I have a 6100LM as well as an older, blue 6100. If you want more classic Marshall sounds, you can get it converted to use EL34s. If you want to use the lead channel for lots of distortion, I'd recommend using JJ6L6GCs in the power stage.
These are one of the best amps they made IMO, but you really need to try it to see if it's for you. If you end up selling an amp to finance your purchase, I'd hang on to the DSL personally as I think it's actually more versatile than the TSL and better sounding likewise. |

Re: Should I buy a 6100LM and sell the TSL or DSL?
this is the best answer on this post , trust me i have owned many marshall amps over the years , the 6100 is still one of the best sounding marshalls
ever built . i had a DSL 50 (fully tuned up ) my 6100 just sounds bigger and fuller , and that was 3 years ago before i found out about TAD tubes . my 6100 sounds so much better with those tubes etc . plus midi control over channel switching , several different marshall tones packed into one amp, i have to say this is a " no brainer " dude... go get that amp asap !!

Re: Should I buy a 6100LM and sell the TSL or DSL?
Thanks for your replies. I just bought it. Shall test it in the evening. What I like in TSL over DSL is the power reduction feature, but what's good about 6100 that it has the same feature and even more (the real power reduction switch, I just need to figure out the triode use vs pentode) and I guess I'm not going to miss the TSL or DSL, depends which one I sell. Thanks again! It's a great forum and it helped me a lot.
