Big problem considering JCM 2000 TSL and Orange box

Ok. So i bought a JCM 2000 tsl and plugged it in Orange box and setting was 16 Om-s on both of them considering that Orange box only has two 16 Om inputs. For the first five minutes everything was working pretty much fine but then everything shut down. It turns out that safety fuse melted. We put in a new fuse and when we turned on amp it got melted again. On the top, amp was pretty hot on the top after couple of minutes (is this normal ?) and there was some weird kind of smell (maybe thats usual, im a noob with tube amplifiers, maybe thats just a smell of tubes getting heated ?). I bought this amp used from a friend and he says that new tubes are in. What could be the problem ? Please help, im pretty much desperate.

It's possible a pair of your EL34s have red plated & failed.

Do you have any spare power tubes to try?

Also just before the amp shut down, did the volume of the amp drop significantly - or was it a straight cut / pop / no volume?

WTF is an orange box?

New tubes need to be biased, have they been? With most tube amp problems replacing the tubes is usually first in the process of elimination. You should always have a spare set, regardless.

Are you refering to an orange stereo cab with 2x16 ohm inputs & have you connected both to the TSL set at 16ohm.

Hopefully that's not what you've done.

Well, I think you nailed the problem. Now all that needs to be determined is the extent of damage.

Ouch thats gona hurt! If it was pugged in that way the Head should have been set for 8 ohms, not 16! man I bet the Tubes did a super nova. Make sure you check the OT for shorts and arcing!

Unfortunately, DSL and TSL amps have "bargain" transformers. They can't take the abuse like some of the older models could. I take extra care when running my TSL's. An impedance mismatch can foul an output transformer really fast.

It probably would be wise to let an authorized tech look at your amp, because a TSL is pretty complicated and this impedance mismatch could have affected some smaller components besides the power tubes and the output tranny.

Re: Big problem considering JCM 2000 TSL and Orange box

Ok heres the deal.
Amp was used for about 4 years and recently got brand new tubes and brand new transformer. This all was done by a well known pro in my town. I plugged 4x12 orange cabinet who only has 16 ohm inputs to a 16 ohm input on amp. Everything worked fine for a couple a minutes but sound was kinda bad and all of the sudden it turned off. Hope i cleared it a bit )

It's still not really clear how you connected it.

e.g. did you run one speaker cable from the 16ohm output of the amp to the 16ohm mono input of the cab?

I'm thinking the amp was hooked up correctly. The new transformer or the new power tubes could have been bad. I'd take it back to the well-known pro who did the work and let him go over it again. Some of those pros are well-known for the wrong reasons.

He says that maybe too weak safety fuses are in. Anyways amp is going to the pro to get checked
