What model is my 93 JCM800 2x12 combo?

The model number is worn away, I can just about make out a 04 (i think) out of the digits. It has vertical inputs.

It has 70's for speakers. It is 50 watt.

I'll try and get a pic soon. The reason I ask is I am not sure if it is modded or not. There are unmarked inputs on the right side of the rear of the amp. I presume line out and 2 loops.

First time post and all that :-)

CHEERS!

Re: What model is my 93 JCM800 2x12 combo?

Well, since someone added an effects loop, it's probably a single channel amp since the duals came with loops. It's a 2x12 I assume since he said speakers not speaker, so all we really need to know is the wattage. How many power tubes does it have? Sounds like you have a 4103 or a 4104, and since you said you can make out an 04... well.

That's probably one of the best combos to get your hands on btw.

Cheers! So do they come with line outs and loops?

If so, which is the line out? The input on the left or the right of the 3?

(presuming the others are loops)

No, the 4104 did not come stock with an effects loop, so those two jacks you have on the back are your aftermarket loop I assume. I can't say for sure without seeing the guts, but you could plug something in and find out. It's not gonna blow up if you plug a pedal in backwards or anything, it just won't make sound.

Scroll down to the 4104 or the 2204. You can get a user manual and schematic there for your amp.

Hah, you'd be in luck, I know how to hot rod those amps pretty well. There's a guy by you, Bird Dog Bobby, who is an amp genius though.

I make the trek out there when needed because he's that good. I'll be in Orlando at Screamfest all weekend if for some reason you're into that sorta thing.

Dude I have been in there! Fascinating store and a great bloke.

I am chasing a ghost because a year ago I played a JCM 800 modded by both Soldano AND Tod Langner in the 80's.

I almost shat my pants. It haunted me so much, my Splawn Quickrod and Mesa amps are both up for sale on ebay now. That is why I got this JCM. I want one channel of perfection :-)

My problem, is Langers mods are always one offs. So I will never be able to recreate that with a mod.

What types of mods would you recommend that he does?

I was at screamfest last year. My wife goes eeevery year. I'll be skipping this one in favor for Deathklok/Mastadon/High on Fire gig next month

What sound are you looking for? If you like that Soldano sound you probably need a gain stage or two added, which means most likely a heftier power tranny and a tube or two added to the preamp. I personally wouldn't chop up a nice JCM 800 combo and do that to it.

I like a handful of the Tone-Lizard mods done to my single channel 800's. Check 'em out here:

I am a little hesistant too but since it has already been modded, and one speaker has been changed, the 'stock" is already out the window.

I am having great results with a cmat tube slammer as a boost so I have the gain aspect sorted out.

I play a skinny guitar with skinny strings and EMG's so I could do with a little more bass even after cranking the crap out of it.

Plug it into a closed back cabinet then. Problem solved!

That is with a 4x12 closed back. I have a ported one too.

I just...want...a smidge more bass.

Re: What model is my 93 JCM800 2x12 combo?

If you're comfortable inside an amp, pull the purple wire off of your impedance selector and stick a .0033uf cap inline there. Wire -> Cap -> Impedance selector. You should add quite a bit of bass that way. If you've never been inside and amp it's my duty to disclaim that there are lethal voltages in there, especially in the power section where that wire is, so if you don't know how to discharge caps stay away.

Thanks! Sounds like a plan.

I checked out the extra inputs: Nothing. They are not sends and returns or a line out.

Here is short power chordy clip of the combo:

SoundClick artist: thefyn - page with MP3 music downloads

I like how complex the gain is. Half is just the JCM800 and the other half is the amp with a boost (cmat mods tube slammer)

I have a JCM800 also.
I apologize if this is a dumb question.
Are you sure those extra "inputs" aren't the external speaker outputs?
Just trying to be helpful.

I don't know. It is a good job whoever did them as they look like they belong. Just no markings.

Does anyone have any pics of the same combo from behind?

dont hesitate to mod your amp (your not using this one for your retirement are you?) just try and keep the mods reversible cause if ya do it once, you'll probably do it again.

Re: What model is my 93 JCM800 2x12 combo?

I opened her up, and it looks like a mod someone did, and then had undone.

I remember reading an amp tech saying the most asked after mod for JCM800's it to unmod it back to stock. So it looks like this is what happened.

I changed one of the speakers to a vintage 30. Replaced some broken screws, used some contact cleaner and swept away the cobwebs (literally)

Re: What model is my 93 JCM800 2x12 combo?

Here are a couple of 4104 photos (front & rear) for what it's worth. These are from an earlier 1982/83/84 model (vertical input jacks, no D.I. output jack).

I personally have the vertical input jack 1983 and a later horizontal input jack 1986 (with D.I. jack) and they both sound awesome when fed with the proper tubes.
