Help identifying this amp?

This amp is being advertised as a 100 Watt Valvestate power stage driving 1x12'' speaker [VS100R]. Every picture I can find of a VS100R doesn't have that kind of knob layout (more than one row).

I'm a Marshall n00b and was wondering if anyone could identify this one for sure. Also, any opinions on it would be cool. How much would you pay?

Many thanks.

Re: Help identifying this amp?

this is kind of a beginner's amp IMO. It's just a run of the mill solid state amp, I wouldn't care what it was called. Looks like an AVT but I don't know.

I think you should save up some money and get into the world of tube amps, they're going to sound a lot better and if you take care of it you only have to buy it once.

Don't mean to sound like a debbie downer but solid state combo amps can only take you so far.

ANY recommended idle current is a guideline and in no way a necessary requirement. There is no skeleton key for any tube amp.

That's one of the earlier AVT's by the look of it.

Get a JCM 800 or 900, makes solid state amps sound like toys.

That amp will be just fine, looks like a AVT series with FX effects. I have both tube and hybrid amps, the later work great for just plugging in.

I think that you are right on with the AVT. The original Valvestate amp were much simpler as far as the layout of the controls. Marshall describes the AVT series as intermediate and MG stuff as beginner.

Now for my opinion. There are two things I see wrong with that amp. The first is it's lack of size. It's almost impossible to use a 1x12 combo in a loud band setting, and that goes for tube 1x12 combos too. They're just not pushing enough air and they have that "maxed out" sound. The second thing wrong is that it is essentially a solid state amp and even though it says Marshall on it, it's not worth very much money. Maybe $150?

It gets even more depressing as a Marshall n00b. My comrades have suggested going with a tube amp like a JCM 800 or 900. It is not likely that you can outfit yourself with one of those in it's half stack form for under $1000 unless you are the savviest of Craigslisters. With time and patience it can be done though. A 2x12 tube combo can be had for a little less and is a very versatile amp.

If you're looking for a cool bedroom amp to just make some noise though, that amp you're looking at will be great

Re: Help identifying this amp?

I'm going to continue my rant..

Hybrid amps should not be so harshly criticized. Most bedroom shredders are buying full on 100 watt tube amps then asking for ways to make it quieter. Why not just get a small combo amp to play at home volumes. I understand with the best of them that we all want to grab the best tube amp out there but there is also a need for reasonableness and sensibility when picking out the amplifier for the required situation. The point is, I don't care who you are, a dimed Marshall 100 watt stack is foolish to be playing at 1am in the morning with kids trying to sleep in the other room. Lets keep this in mind and focus on getting the right tones for the right gig. I have heard amazing musicians play out of virtually gear worth nothing and making it sound amazing. Gear will not make you play better.

/end rant

Re: Help identifying this amp?

Yep, AVT it is....
A technician told me once that the AVT amps have very weak poweramps...
If you should buy an solid state amp, look for an early Valvestate amp (with less knobs). They served well for Chuck from Death...

Re: Help identifying this amp?

Epic battle never actually said what his intentions were with that amp and I have no issues with hybrid amps. I still have my VS8100 halfstack from 12 years ago. Lol
This forum is a great place to learn about various lines of Marshalls and maybe help new guys make smarter decisions. And yes, awesome gear does not make you play better, but it does make you wanna play more.

Any idea if Chuck was using pedals in front of his Valvestate?
