Ooops!

Just got home from work and realized I left my 401 on stanby last night and all day. Haven't tried it yet but would this normally be a bad thing?

Re: Ooops!

I don't think it's damaged. I have heard a story where a guy had left his Fender combo on stanby for a week! And his amp was totally ok, tubes where probably a bit worn but it worked normally.

Re: Ooops!

So, it seems I took 18 hours off my tubes. Thanks for the quick replies.

Re: Ooops!

I've done it before because the red switch light was burned out and I just didn't notice the amp on standby. Everything was fine though minus some undetectable tube life. I did install a new switch though to prevent another little mishap.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, worse has happened. just look at the heaters and make sure the are all even colored and that there is no white fluffy stuff in the tube.

Re: Ooops!

If the amp was on standby, then all that was on in the tubes were the heaters. Therefore there was not any "massive" or "excessive" heat coming off the power tubes. You did not shave any time off of the tubes. At least not 18 hours. This is nothing to worry about. Just be thankful that you put it on standby.

Re: Ooops!

Nothing to worry about in this instance, valves weren't doing any amplifying therefore no wear and tear.

^This.

It's actually easier for the tubes to be on standby than being switched on and off.

I remember reading that in the days of old, 10 or so hours without operation was considered the time when it was better to switch the amps off from standby.

When I rehearse or gig, the amp is on standby during the breaks, which can be pretty long sometimes.

Regards
Sam

That's not entirely true. The cathode is continually being heated, boiling off electrons and they've nowhere to go. Eventually cathode poisoning begins to to occur.
There's no real damage done but it will have shortened the valves life expectancy.

iirc he and I are from the same era although he probably traveled more than I did. I was stuck playing gigs predominantly in Hawaii as well as the Philippines and Japan back in the 70's.

if I could only do a fraction of what we could back then, but then again I'd be divorced, have a hernia and live in a cardboard box

Re: Ooops!

To crash test his new line of amps out I heard Eddie Van Halen would turn his amp on all the way not on standby at full volume and come back after a month.

I'm not sure if that's true, but he says he'd come back after a month and the thing would still be wailing (lol).

If that is true even five hour gigs is nothing compared to that.

Re: Ooops!

Yeah I saw that clip too. Apparently iirc they used a warehouse setting, he'd fire the amp up and strike a chord or whatever and then walk away to return weeks later.
