New JCM800 Newguy Question...
Hi, first post, great forum!
OK...straight up...I've never owned a Marshall, despite having played since the Sixties ![]() I plan to go listen to a JCM800 reissue, as well as the JVM 410. I do only studio work, but I do a lot of covers of modern alternative stuff, and though I've listened to Mesas and tried them in person, I'm not crazy about them. They do sound good, but something about them ....hmmm. So, I'm interested in my first Marshall. Right now I'm using a Hiwatt Studio Stage with 4*12s and it's a great amp for those REM crunch kind of things, or Tom Petty say, but for alternative and hard rock I need something heavier. I just bought a Gibson Les Paul 57 RI from the Custom Shop and I love the way Les Paul's sound through Marshalls. What is worrying me is that there are so many purists who do not think the new reissues are any good. I have read some users who have originals and the new one and say they are both great. I wondered what the opinion out there is here in the Marshall forum on the reissue 800s. As far as tones, I have to be versatile, though my personal favorite Marshall tones would be Paul Kossoff's sound in "Alright Now". Thanks Tom |

Sorry, back to your ?? I have never tried the 800, but you can get any sound you want out of the JVM...I have several pedals I used to have to use to get the sounds I liked, but now, they don't get used near as much... |

The 800 is a nice amp. The reissues are nice, if a bit pricey. Keep in mind that they are not gain monsters in terms of "modern hard rock." The JVM will get you simular gain levels and then out to uber levels of distortion. You might also want to consider a JCM 2000 DSL, as to my ears it sounds simular to the 800 with added gain.

If you are considering a new 800 reissue, why not look around for a real 800. You'll probably save some $$$.

Re: New JCM800 Newguy Question...
if your into racks..i used to use a mesa 50/50 with a jmp1 and a BBE sonic maximizer 362 that setup had so much punch you felt it from the inside out..
but still dam i miss my hiwatt custom 100 that SOB was just at a whole other level of power...i would probably keep the hiwatt and find the right pedal to get what you want..the new 800's im sure are amazing but i think id still be mucking around with that hiwatt to see if i could what i wanted out of it..big mistake getting rid of mine and at that time i paid like 300 bucks for it.gsssss |
