Original jcm 800 , seen bette days

Hey everyone, my names chris and im in the us army. My buddy gave me a 80 something jcm 800 2 channel amp(50watt combo). How do I tell what version of the JCM 800 it is? Also this amp has seen better days, and when i play it loud it will cut out and ill have to hit it to get it back on. I dont play it now cus I dont wanna damage the amp. Any ideas what this could be, also now the amp doesnt distort very cleanly and sounds brittle. Any ideas

thanks

Chris

GT 12AX7M's sound GREAT in 800's. Hard to find though.

I would change the preamp tubes too, they're not expensive, and easy to swap. Lot's of choices for tube brands.
Vacuum tubes @ thetubestore. New and NOS electron tubes for any amplifier.
