TSL 601 volume surge at shutdown
is this normal? I'd say the volume triples for a moment if I shut down while a note is still ringing. Is this a symptom of the power tubes going? it's a fairly new symptom.
I've been running preamp volume around 4, gain at 4, and master at 7ish and it's not overwhelmingly loud; especially compared to 100watt heads I've played in stores. could be normal for a 60w head. I've replaced all 4 preamp tubes with Marty's NOS tubes but have no idea how old the power tubes are. BTW, it's driving a 1960ax. |

Re: TSL 601 volume surge at shutdown
Sounds like you might be getting a current surge from the power transformer when the magnetic field is collapsing. Even though you have turned the amp off, the power filter caps have a lot of energy and since you are trying to drive a signal, the amp is trying to work. It's best to turn the amp on standby and then after a few minutes shut it off completely. I'm not saying it will damage the amp, but you are basically playing the amp in a momentary brownout. This is the effect that is obtained using a variac. Eddie Van Halen burned up a lot of Marshalls playing his famous "brown sound." It's especially hard on the heater elements inside of the tubes.
