Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
I'm currently amp shopping (and having great fun doing so!!) and was wondering if it would be safe to store a valve combo on it's side?
Reason being is that the wife has granted me a whole (small) cupboard to myself (lucky me) for my music equipment, so not enough room for a stack, perfect fit for a 1x12(I'm thinking of a DSL401), OR a good fit for a 2x12 (preferably a JVM) IF I stand it on it's side. Is is safe to do so or would storing it on it's side like that cause problems with the valves? I'd love to get the JVM if I can because I prefer the sound of a 2x12. But I dont want to get it if the only way I can store it will damage it/lead to problems. I love the sound of DSL401 so will happily plump for that instead if need be. I could always get a 2x12 cab for the DSL at a later date (I'm assuming it's perfectly fine to stand a cab on it's side?). Cheers! Steve |

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
I don't see why it'd do any damage, so long as the tubes are strapped in tightly.

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
A simple question that a simple answer should suffice. Are the components on their side? No. ok then.
For brief periods there should be no harm, however, it was NOT designed to be in that position for long periods of time. Be a man, tell the wife where you're going to keep it -upright-

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
Thanks guys :-)
Steelhorse - I tried that tack with the missus, she didn't take too kindly too it! I've slowly but surely been filling the apartment with my gear over the last few years and she's only recently started to notice that I suddenly seem to have acquired 5 times as much gear as I once had! I think I'll have to go for the DSL401 as that'll fit perfectly in what little space I have left. I'm thinking I'll get a 2x12 cab and stand that on it's side with the 401 on top of it (the correct way up). That should do the job! |

I hear ya foxy.
My situation is slightly different. I threaten an expansion of both gear AND home if I hear complaints. Suddenly the bank balances look much better than my tomfoolery!

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
Every man should have a room or well appointed shed for his own space.
This room should be full of music gear, power tools you rarely use and posters of hot chicks. Tell her that it really helps you think and contemplate, and ultimatley will help you communicate better, improving your marriage and helping you to bond in a closer, more loving relationship. Women love to hear that sh*te.

Play by the rules at first Foxy, but give it a few weeks and she might not even mind it sitting by the TV in the lounge. Patience is a virtue-always have a plan.

And at the end of the day who wins? Marshall, with all the room it needs.

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
Sorry to ignore the "wife baiting" (love to join in). However, back to business.
Electricity doesn't see gravity as being an issue generally, plus most components are firmly fixed in place. Your valves can have clips applied to make sure they stay still. Reason I know it isn't an issue, is I installed a 1952 Chicago Music Corp amp in a home made case. The amp had to move from being a horizontal application, to vertical, so it would fit. I put some tube retainers in and, since then, it's been used a great amount with no problems (and believe me a rats nest is tidier than the wiring on this rig...!!!) Just make sure your vents are not hindered by anything and that there is a free flow of air around the amp or you may just end up frying it. Good luck and BTW, I bought my missus a Fender Jazz bass (which she can't play) then said "I'll set the amps and cables up in the spare room so you can use them too"........ ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
Thanks for that Ptate, although I won't be using the amp whilst it is on it's side, I'll only be storing it in the cupboard like that. When I play it will be the right way up.
Cheers! Steve |

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
My wife is great. I have a Marshall half stack sitting in the living room 4 feet from the tv. I'll be moving it to my end of the couch soon though to get it a little out of the way. I have a mass of wires and at least three pedals at my end of couch, along with sometimes TWO major size amps in the living room, if I'm doing some experimenting for a few days.
I have to play damn soft while she's in the living room and we're watching tv, but she has no prob with part of my equipment in there. Lucky me.

Re: Storing a Marshall Valve Combo
a combo tube amp is upside down when compared to its head counterpart. I would think if they can be upside down with no harm, then on their side would be no different. I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen bands play heads on their end before. I wouldn't do that, but storing it shouldn't matter. In fact, I've got 3 marshall heads on their end in a closet right now. I've had them for many years without a problem yet.
