Any TSL head owners?
Anyone own a TSL head? I am thinking about getting one for use in my cover band. We cover everything from 50's to metallica. I recently tried a Mesa Boogie triple rectifier and pardon my french....it sucked ass! The one thing I liked about it was the solo boost. Is it possible to set the lead channel on the TSL louder than the crunch channel for a solo VOLUME boost?

Did you not notice any of the recent threads covering this topic?

Re: Any TSL head owners?
TSL can be versatile but the sounds you'll get form it are sub-par IMO. I've played in a working cover band with a DSL and with a OD pedal, you'll get all the versatility you'll ever need and better tone to boot.
I used the DSL's green channel in crunch mode and the red channel in lead 1 mode. When I needed a clean sound, I'd go to the green channel and manually switch it to clean before the tune started. You might want to consider a JMP-1 if you need more versatility or if you don't want to use an OD pedal or twiddle with knob to get a clean sound. For 50's type stuff, the DSL or TSL is a bad choice. Edit: The opinion above is based on me actually owning a TSL 100, DSL50 and DSL100 and DSL50 with MM choke. A Boss SD-1 can be used on the green channel to boost it a little for specific parts where you need an extra edge. You could also just dime the green channel's gain pot and chuck the pedal. Re: Any TSL head owners?
You're asking one amp to cover a lot of ground. Sounds to me like you need a Fender somewhere in your back line. I do not know of any amp that can go from Buddy Holly to Metallica. The DSL and TSL are high gain amps. You can get a nice clean out of them, especially with the right tubes. However, when I think clean 50's and 60's, I'm thinking Fender.
Maybe you can find a nice Bassman and have the tone caps modded for guitar use. I played through two of these in a band that covered Willie Nelson all the way to Def Leppard. The bottom line is you are not going to "nail" every specific tone. You can get close and pull it off, but it won't be right on. Marty

Re: Any TSL head owners?
Maybe someone's playing sucks ass, because I can make my TSL sing so for subpar tone, whatever, that's just one obviously biased opinion from a dude who has to play an SD-1 in front of a modified DSL so put that in your pipe and smoke it before you run with that opinion.
fwiw, I hear what Marty is saying. It's a huge stretch, but imo if you want or need to cover a lot of ground maybe get an amp like the twin reverb re-issue and use different pedals to get the tones or sounds you're after. I played one the other day and we put a Digitech Metal Master in front of it and it sounded really decent and from bedroom to regular levels too. hmm....

Re: Any TSL head owners?
I can get many different types of sound out of my TSL... None of which disappoint I might add. As far as some of your more modern sounds go it will do everything you need it to. Unfortunately I don't know if it will give you much on your 50s and 60s stuff. Your Question about using the red channel as a boost for the yellow... You can but if you decide to get this head then your yellow channel may be exactly what you need for that more 50's and 60's sound and your red channel be for the more modern rock tone. You'll have to tweak with it and see if it you like it. I know I can get a really slightly distorted sound out of mine that, if I used a strat, might get you the sound you're seeking for your vintage tone.

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe and it is by far the most versatile amps I've used - I've played everything from folk to punk through that thing and it's great. The onboard distortion is a bit sucky IMO so yeah, you'll need pedals especially for a sound inbetween clean and crunch if cranking it isn't an option - I used a Rat 2 pedal with it and it was just the right level of aggression! |

Re: Any TSL head owners?
Wow, I'm suprised you didn't like the Mesa Boogie. The other guitarist in my band plays a Triple Rectifier and I think he has that thing dialed in pretty well. I have a JCM2000 TSL100 head and the first thing I did was replace those piece of crap Svetlana tubes that they use in the factory. I retubed with Eurotube JJ KT77 Power Tubes (EL34's basically, but are designed for a lower end crunch), and also ECC83's specifically designed for high gain. I was so unhappy with the stock tubes, I asked around and I heard various people recommending various tubes. After listening to a few different tubes, I decided to go with the Eurotubes. Different people prefer different sounds, so don't take my word for it. I'm just saying that my band plays Disturbed, Metallica, Godsmack, etc. and that's the equipment I use.
Experiment before you buy anything. That's an awfully large purchase to not be satisfied after you buy it. Thanks and good luck!!! |
