I need YOUR help on buying ANY Marshall Combo - Vintage or Modern
First time thread starter, long time reader.I really would like some opinions on the best marshall combo amp there is for under or around $1,000. I don't care if it's used or new, vintage or modern. I'm currently looking for a new amp and have NO Marshall experience (save for noodling around in the store). I know that Marshalls were used by many artists that I like during the 70's and 80's (I don't listen to much new stuff) and that I have enjoyed playing on what I have tried. Due to this, my style is naturally more vintage. Most of the artists whose style I liked were punk or classic metal. Classic / Punk includes the Jim Carroll Band (probably no one knows them, but I love the sound on "Catholic Boy"--this is the tone I am looking for), RAMONES, Dead Boys, New York Dolls. Metal includes Priest, Savatage, Mercyful Fate, and Maiden. I should also say that I play A LOT of vintage psychadelic 60's garage stuff (think: 13th Floor Elevators, ZZ Top...even Neil Young). I know that a tweed Fender is usually best for this; however, I can't see plunking down 1000 bucks for a 57 champ "just line in" amp, if you know what I mean. If possible, I would LOVE a Marshall that could replicate (or come close) to these tones. So, here I am. What I would like to do is get your opinions on what is the best combo amp out there. I just don't have the room for a full stack right now. I'm also more into studio/recording work right now (ie, I don't need a 1000 watt behemoth ).I am most interested in playing with a Les Paul; though, I have a single coil guitar as well. If there is anything else you're interested in asking, feel free to ask as I will try to respond quite a bit. I've listed about all that I need to--OH, AND I AM LOOKING FOR A TUBE AMP ONLY. I'd love to get the "experts" opinion on this. What I would like to do is get some opinions, try some suggestions out, make a purchase, and then do a follow through or something. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!! |

Try a used JCM 2000 DSL 100 watt head; they go for around $600-$650. Great sounds. A used JCM 2000 TSL 100 watt heads are also great for around the same price. good luck in your search.

Re: I need YOUR help on buying ANY Marshall Combo - Vintage or Modern
I just bought this Combo
My new Marshall - 1984 MARSHALL JCM 800 4010 Its kinda in the middle between being Vintage or Modern. I paid $1090 Total. This JCM 800 amp is very versatile and is arguably the best sounding marshall amp. This combo is loud enough for gigging and can also go through extention cabs for a bigger sound. I think JCM 800 single channel combos are also a good investments particularly if they're un-modded and in good condition.

Any combo... Vintage or Modern ?
How about both ? The Vintage Modern 2266C would be a good bet ![]() But the price might be a little higher but if you are lucky you might stumble across a used one for about $1000. Marshall Amps :: 2266C

Re: I need YOUR help on buying ANY Marshall Combo - Vintage or Modern
Thanks for the replies! Originally, I had thought of getting the JCM 800--it just seemed to be what I was probably looking for.
However... I'd like to give the other two suggestions a try as well--especially the Vintage Modern, it sounds really cool. |
