JCM800 2204, 2210, or a Marshall Major?
Okay, here's the scoop. I'm playing on a 1962 Stratocaster, and I mainly play John Frusciante, SRV, and Jimi Hendrix. Now I'm trying to decide if I should get a 2204, or 2210 or a Marshall Major. I know I can't get the exact tone for all three artists with one amp, but which amp would be most versitile?
If you have an answer, please explain why or why I shouldn't get this amp. P.S. I mainly go for the live sounds on John Frusciante, not studio as the studio is way too hard and expensive to rig up. For example, which would get me the tone at live at Slane? I know JF uses a Silver Jub and a Major, but those two are a little out of the question right now as my tree hasn't produced that much money..sadface.

Frusciante, Hendrix and SRV have that just-breaking-up tone which the 1959 type circuit does great when paired with a strat. The problem here will be sheer volume. To get "that" tone with 1959 type circuit it gets loud!! You need to pair it with an attenuator of some description. The 2204 is a little to hard sounding (especially with a strat) and gainy for those tones IMO. You've mentioned the silver jub and major are out of question, but unfortunaltely a 1959/1987 will be a bit pricey too, even the RIs. What is your price limit?

I would agree with American Viking, jcmcmp or paolo.. Plus I will add the Marshall Major is not only expensive but if anything else is wrong is very expensive. Plus the Majors do not have the traditional Marshall tone, think of a Fender Twin Reverb *minuis reverb* on steroids and they need to be modded with a master volume to be even remotely playable!
Cheers, Charlie

Well, I'm not really sure what my price range is, I'm just considering all options right now, cause I know either way if I want a good amp I'm going to have to save. Maybe someone could give me some prices on these amps? |

Re: JCM800 2204, 2210, or a Marshall Major?
Twinky Bomb,
Majors were a non master volume model and you would need to modify it to have a Master Volume. I had an 71 Major that was modded with a Master Volume and it tamed it down but I needed more High Gain which is why I am running a jcm900 sl-x Cheers, Charlie
