Back when I was touring the Chinese lounge circuit, we gave away condoms with our bands name on the wrapper. We also gave out panties with our bands name on them. We had mannequins on stage, too much fog, flash pots that went off without warning (or permits) and...

And it was a riot. It was ALL tongue-in-cheek. Yeah, we rocked and gave the crowd the dance tunes they wanted but also we were tight, well rehearsed and our gear was always ready to go.

I never could get the eye liner on without some help.

What I said was that I find it more entertaining to watch a groups of guys enjoying themselves, even if the material is sketshy, rather than moody brooding guys who take things way to seriously.

There are alot of guys who hold themselves to a high standard, and thats a good thing, but it's the ones who are flexible enough to realize thats there
is an element of entertainment, are the one who make it.

Yeah I get pissed too, when I see the next crop of boy-bands, or teeny-queenies who are triple-tracked cause they cant sing, but get signed strictly on looks, or who they know. OR some whack-job who gets noticed cause he's totally off-the-wall.
But what irks me even more, is that I personally know some incredible musicians, with some fantastic original material....but they are so picky, introverted, and impossible to work with, they dont even play-out anymore.
And it's a damn shame that their work will probabaly never get out in the world.

This thread is getting way too heavy. And way off the topic.
So no, I wouldnt pay $850 for the fake wall, but I'd take it for free cause I think it's kinda cool in a funny way. Probably use it as a rec-room decoration.

Re: You have got to see this!!!!

Jimi Hendrix was a master musician. He also played with his teeth, humped his stacks, set his guitar on fire, dressed wildly...etc. People came to hear him play, and people also came to see his show. He certainly was noticed and had fans because of both. Eric Clapton however isn't noted for his showmanship or wild antics. I could definitely see Jimi using a wall of fake Marshalls, but not Eric. There is room for both in Rock and Roll. Gene Simmons certainly thinks the show is more important and Carlos Santana thinks it is the music. You'll never get total agreement so I think you just have to be true to yourself on stage. If you are a showman, you do what you think will entertain. If you're not, your show will be more a music only thing.

Nah, I obviously wasn't implying that you were saying all Perfectionists are going nowhere, the ambiguity is clear on both sides, isn't it?

...whatever.

I realize in this thread I sound very critical. And you are right, when a group is truly having a good time it projects on to the audience. Fireworks, makeup and other antics can naturally come with the territory. There is a balance, but the music it's self must take precedence, a good performer is a good musician first.

If I practice till I get the music, really get it, then performance and the audience actually enjoying a show will be so much easier. You say be flexible for entertainment's sake, I say work it till you can be flexible enough to entertain.

But, yeah, I agree, I don't take myself that seriously, just the music.

Re: You have got to see this!!!!

I got 2 or more words for this ... PINK FLOYD! Tommy Lee and his whole kit being spun around cantilevered over the audience while still thumping, or Ted Nugent diving off a stack of Marshalls dressed in a loin cloth and crouching up against the stack like a crazed corned animal. Bowie. Early Genesis. David Lee Roth and his suicidal jumping. Alice Cooper and the guillotine with his head coming off and rolling into a basket. Gene and his fire breathing. The Outlaws and their curtain of sparks. It's endless, it's entertainment and it's ROCK and ROLL!

Re: You have got to see this!!!!

It just kinda hit me today....

How about life size cut-outs of guitars!!! Could you imagine? 10 to 12 of the worlds most sought after guitars, right there on stage with you at the local guzzle and puke. Hmmm... lets see, what would I want?

Re: You have got to see this!!!!

I would want one of those Jimmy Page doubleneck Gibsons.

If it was a cutout I wouldn't have to keep all those strings in tune.

Life size cut outs of the band too so when you post video clips they are there rock'n with you.

Re: You have got to see this!!!!

Cut out of Eric Johnson for me.

Of course I would have to be a cutout too, but my cutout would be sitting in an audience chair, then I would have to get the autograph of the other cutout.

I never said one stage set piece was "enough". It's just one small piece if you're lucky.

LOL That's a great idea! Fake Marshall's and fake guitars! LOL That would be perfect for Spinal Tap!

I recall hearing Frank Zappa played a show with about 100 Pignose amps once as a wall...except he used them!
