Spinal Tap

Ok... I may be a wee bit of a cheesy kinda guy, but... Spinal Tap is bloody hilarious. I still laugh hard everytime I watch "This Is Spinal Tap". Well, I happened to see online that they have a new CD/DVD out and just had to get it...

Today it arrived. Complete with diorama. How fun is that?!

Drunk...stoned...or down with the flu, it still made me laugh. I've seen the original movie at least 30 times. I'll have to check out the new stuff. Cool!

Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Nowhere
Exactly

Ok, my bad... I guess it wasn't on YouTube, but on the website for the new album, Spinal Tap :: 'Back from the Dead' - New Album Available Now!, there's a clip of them on NBC being interviewed by Conan O'Brien.

To Quote Wikipedia:
(Spinal Tap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) "This is Spinal Tap was accompanied by a soundtrack album of the same name. In the years since the film was made, the actors who portrayed the band members have played concerts and released music under the Spinal Tap name.

Guest, McKean, and Shearer are touring in the U.S. in April and May 2009and plan toperform as Spinal Tap in a "One Night Only World Tour" on 30 June 2009 at Wembley Arena in London. Support on the night will come from The Folksmen..."

Re: Spinal Tap

I saw 'em on Late Night and they kicked @ss! Nigel had 3 or 4 JCM800 full stacks behind him. St. Hubbins was in great voice and Derek and Nigel nailed the "as low as you can possible sing" 'heavy' backup vocals during Heavy Duty Rock 'n Roll. Brilliant.

Re: Spinal Tap

Crap!!!!
The Maiden vid finished right before Dave Murray was going to tell us how to get a good sound using a strat.

BTW... was that a Hughes Kettner I saw Mr. Smith using???

Just pulling a leg or two.

You know, I'll pop in Spinal Tap when I begin to take this whole musician thing too seriously. Helps me to handle managment, A&R reps, booking agents and band mates. And besides, it can't be that bad...

I havent had a drummer explode yet.

Re: Spinal Tap

I saw them play live in Chicago after the movie came out in the mid 1980's. It was great to hear the songs in their entirety; in the movie you really don't. They played the show straight, like a real band. No comedy bits, malfunctioning props etc. and that was nice, because corny as their songs are I wanted a real show and that's what they provided.

Re: Spinal Tap

Just got the album last night...it rocks!!! Some very impressive lead work by Nigel. There's also on track "Short and Sweet" that's around 8 mins. long and has guest solos from Phil Collen, Vai and John Mayer. Truthfully, Nigel can hold his own against 'em!

Also, "Funky Sex Farm" hits it out of the park. 19 tracks may be a little too much on Tap to listen through all at once...but I'm really glad they redid their whole catalogue. Thoroughly entertaining.

I love Spinal Tap, but I do hope you share some of what you were smoking when you decided this! LOL I'm better than "Nigel" and I bow to Vai! *S*

Re: Spinal Tap

We all know Via is a much "better" guitarist than Christopher Guest...but I'm getting a buzz from Nigel's playing on this record!

Have you heard the album?

No. I have the first two albums; the second one isn't very good. But my band decided to do "Big Bottom"! I've dusted off my bass already!

Big Bottom would be really fun live! Maybe follow it up with a jazz oddessey?

Re: Spinal Tap

My wife is... Shall we say rather "well endowed" in the posterior, and she thinks Big Bottoms is the best Spinal Tap tune ever!!! At one point she even had it as her ring-tone. She loves to sing the lyric, "... talkin' 'bout mudflaps, my gal's got 'em!" I guess it sorta falls into the category of one of those things that just never gets old. Rock on Big Bottoms!

It's not a comedy, it's a satire. If you watch it expecting to see a funny movie you'll be dissappointed. But if you suspend disbelief, and look at it as if it were a real documentary then you'll laugh.

I saw the original movie when it first came out, (also bought the album) and being a musician I found it hillarious. But many of my non-playing friends, didn't get it,...they were expecting someting like the Blues Brothers movie.

Obviously Spinal Tap is a ficticous/production band made up of actors, who could play a little...like the Monkees (the Blues Bros backup band were real musicians, though).
What Im not sure of is weather Guest, McKean & Shearer really played on the albums or did they use session players, and do they use backup musicians when they appear live.

Re: Spinal Tap

There exists somewhere an advert video of spinal tap for Marshall. I have not been able to find this anywhere. I do have the Marshall Poster with Nigel posing with his trusty amp.

I love me some TAP
