jmp mkii confusion
Hi, this is my first time on here so bear w/me. A friend of mine owns some properties & he just cleaned one of them out & stumbled upon a 2x12 Marshall. He knew I played so he asked me if I wanted it since the people who rented from him left it behind. I am not very familiar w/older Marshall amps but this seems like it might be sweet. As I said it is a 2x12 combo-the mains & standby switches are the large black & red style. Controls in this order right of the switches-presence,bass,middle,treble,vol 1,vol 2(roman numeral), followed by four inputs labled 1 & 2 in roman numeral. On the control plate it only says JMP. Underneath near the tubes though it has the labeling JMP mkii. The serial # is a 4 digit followed by the letter "H". I haven't examined the tubes yet but it has two power tubes & three pre-amp tubes. It has two speaker outputs & the ohm selector is a knob that you actually pull out w/a window to show which ohm you have chosen. Also the cabinet has been stripped of any covering & grill. If anyone can give me hand idenitfying the type of JMP mkii it is I would appreciate it.

Re: jmp mkii confusion
is there a S/L or SL/A in front of the serial number ?
S/L= 100 WATTS SL/A=100 WATTS H = 1976 so it looks like a JMP combo from 1976 , cool old amp !! you can get some great tone from that amp !! iF they left it behind , i'm guessing it needs some work ???? Last edited by HOT TUBES 70; 05-24-2009 at 02:02 PM. |

Actually there is neither. It has an S/A? Ya its pretty dirty, but everything looks to be intact. I am @ work today so I haven't had a chance to play w/it to much. The speakers around the rim have been chewed on a bit.

but maybe some of the long time users could shed some more light on that suject . has it got 2 inputs or 4 ? ![]() i know that on the 4 input heads they would jumper 2 inputs together to get more gain out of the amps . |

the combo version of the 1987 head. A 70's version of the 60's Bluesbreaker, and the model was made '74 - '81 |

Re: jmp mkii confusion
Ok. I thought that the channel switching thing would work since it has vol.1 & 2, figuring that those were assigned to inputs 1 & 2 respectively w/high & low inputs for each one thus the four inputs. Is my understanding correct? Thanks for the additional info fellas.

Re: jmp mkii confusion
These old amps are not like a channel switching amp. Channel switching hadn't even been thought of when these amps were made. Both channels share the same master EQ section, but Channel I will be a bright channel while Channel II will be a more bassy sounding channel.
A common trick was to couple the inputs together by connecting a patch cable between the bottom input of Channel I and the top input of Channel II, then plugging the guitar into Channel I. Then you can use both volumes to balance betweens lows and highs. These are very pedal friendly amps and sound AWESOME with a high gain overdrive in front of them at low volume.
