Just got my DSL100! Which OD pedal?
My first Marshall! I'm very happy with it so far. I've never experienced CRUNCH like this before. I would like to get some kind of good overdrive pedal to milk it a bit more, especially at lower volumes. Can I get some suggestions for pedals around or under $150? (Please, no off-brand $250+ pedals, though I know they sound great.) I'm aware of the standards like Boss OD-1 or SD-1, Tube Screamer, etc. Any other suggestions? Also any tube suggestions? It has stock tubes...

Guyatone OD2 is my personal favorite. A few simple mods and it can be the best sounding OD ever! The Boss Blues Driver is a nice sounding pedal too. Barber Direct Drive, Ratt, Fulldrive and countless others all sound pretty good with a DSL too.

Re: Just got my DSL100! Which OD pedal?
It's a little out of the price range you mentioned but the Ibanez Tubescreamer TS808 reissue ($169) is great. I also tried the MXR Zakk Wylde ($100), OCD Fulltone (also $169), Ibanez TS9DX (2nd choice personally - $109) and lot of guys like the Maxon 808 ($109) but I never tried one.
I have not tried anything above in the DSL50 but the TS808. My Dual Rectifier (which is finicky about what pedals it will digest) didn't like the OCD or Zakk Wylde, both were great at low volume but squealy when cranked.

ZW's are decent od's, basically a hot-rodded SD-1. They have super cheap switches in them though, and there was a 'recall' but even after the repair, my buddy has broken his twice more. Dunlop keeps fixing it, but it never lasts long enough to use for anything.

They were squeally when cranked, but for the price and low volume they work out. I hadn't heard of the recall.

Re: Just got my DSL100! Which OD pedal?
Was on the earlier models. I find you can't crank the drive, but you can crank the level, leave the drive down around 11o'clock and back the tone off a bit for a good ZW type tone... With an 800 anyway.
The new KK JCM 800 has that 'beast boost' which sounds pretty much like an SD-1 or ZW overdrive pushing the front end. Not footswitchable though. |
